Monarch

After trying all summer to catch some decent shots of butterflies I finally got some! Who knew all I had to do was wait until the fall to do it. The cold weather slowed them down significantly. Unfortunately I think the Monarchs I saw, and I saw a lot of them, probably missed the mass migration which I understand occured sometime in September from what some other people had told me.
This was shot during the weekend Lighthouse Challenge tour. I found this guy near "Old Barney", Barnegat Lighthouse. It was the first stop we made on the tour Sunday morning at about 8 AM. It was quite chilly in the early morning air which explains the ease at which I managed to take the shots.
At our last stop, my son found a Monarch lying lifeless on the lawn at Cape May Lighthouse. He was beautiful, his wings were still so vibrant. I collected him up carefully and brought him home. I'm not sure what I will do with him. I don't know how to preserve them or anything and his body was shriveled, but he was still lovely. His wings are about half spread so you can still see all the detail on both sides.

you were lucky to get this one to sit still, i've been trying all summer without any luck! good shot
He does look great in this setting!
Nicely captured, I have never had the opportunity to shoot one of these but I can imagine it takes some patience. What I especially like is the blurred and dynamic background. Here's what you can do with the one you found: Just Google for "What is the proper way to preserve a butterfly." ;)
Laurie I am definitely feeling this capture, you snapped it at the absolute right moment capturing the butterfly in all it's beautiful glory, loos like it was soaring past the flower when you captured this, I like the perspective.
Good DOF, nice one, One of your best images in a while :)
Suby
great macro. I think you should just take pictures of it for us to see:) the best way of preserving it. I have a dead butterfly photo too but it doesnt really look dead.
ive commented anonymous by mistake:)
3 thing to preserve bflies -
keep em amway from sunlight, keep em in a dry jar (use mothballs if u must), do NOT touch their wings
lovely shot with nice dof....7.25/10
There is something truly stunning about the way nature has decorated butterfly wings.
Fall is a really great time to capature images of insects and reptiles. Lizards seem to move very slowly during the morning. Great shot!
Beautiful! This , for me a monarch on goldenrod is the perfect fall shot
Great capture! They are very elusive.
Beautiful...Liking the colours in this..Read your comment on samarths blog....awesome idea! gonna start doing that myself from now on..:) thanks
Laurie, Laurie, Laurie, you have been an extremely naughty girl, did you think Suby would not find out... (pauses for dramatic effects and tension).......... (still pausing).........
"Wildlife photography is wonderful and extremely challenging since, unlike people and landscapes, they are usually extremely uncooperative and it takes a lot of skill to get a successful capture."
Does the comment above ring any bells? So people photography is not challenging and people are always cooperative? Ha ye of little knowledge (at least for people photography).
Suby
Excuse me Suby? That comment was directed at Yanik's statement apologizing to those who do not appreciate wildlife photography. I wanted him to not feel the need to apologise.
"I know many of you don’t like wildlife photography-for those of you who do, hope you enjoy :D"
You must have some ego to think it was directed at you. I think you need to check it at the door.
I have lots of people shots of clients and not so many successful ones of wildlife. Wildlife is by far the most difficult to capture. I think your the one with little knowledge here.
Unless you are the Papparazi trying to sneak shots of unwilling celebs, or you are a sports photographer, doing portraits of people who are paying you to do it, or posing for you or don't mind having their pictures done is much easier than wildlife.
Laurie, me dissapointed, VERY DISSAPOINTED (feel free to once again place dramtic pause & music here)......
Okay OFCOURSE I KNOW the comment on Yaniks blog was no directed at anyone expecially me, I saw it and I was in a very mischeivous mode and thought I could just have a little fun with you just getting my point accross as well that I did not necessarily agree with you.
So me dissapointed as me thinks you is one of those out there that understands my brand of humoour, as for you thinking me have ego and did not check it at door, come on girl, this is the Subster, WHAT EGO.
I did not mean to offend you, was just taking trying to make you laugh, well since I failed and Laurie no longer like Suby, me go jump of the nearest bridge now.

Suby
Suby, your comment came across as snide. There was no reason for you to come here to reply to what I said on Yanik's blog, telling him how much I appreciate the difficulty in capturing wildlife when compared to portraits of people or landscapes.
such a lovely capture.I always try, without much luck to say the least.
really pretty.
you just captured "the moment".
beautiful
Hey Suby, I still love you...
:)
Really nice shot. There is real beauty in the simple things of life.
Gotta love wildlife photography :) I was at a butterfly room thing in the zoo and didn't get such a clear shot... kudos to you.
Rearlly Really beautiful colors, detail and DOF. Just fantastic.
Laurie, I haven't had a chance to peruse many blogs in the last couple of weeks and going through your latest images, I have to say, your photos just keep getting better and better. This one is really lovely!
This is one impressive butterfly shot in every way. The color is magnificant.
Great capture - Nice detail and depth of field here..
