NJ Lighthouse Challenge 2006-Hereford Inlet Lighthouse

Hereford Inlet Lighthouse was put into operation in on May 11, 1874. At that time the village was know as Anglesea, it is now called North Wildwood. The tower is 49.5 feet tall and it’s beacon was visible for at least 13 nautical miles.A severe storm caused major damage to the structure in 1913 prompting it to be moved 150 feet west to where it stands today. The lighthouse was “manned” until 1964 when an automatic light tower was built.
The beautiful Victorian design features 5 fireplaces and resembles a beautiful Victorian summer home on a tree-studded property with stunning gardens and a beautiful location on the beach.
The lighthouse is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places and is open for tours in the summer months.
This is another one of my favorite lighthouses. I had not visited this one before and regret that, due, once again, to the time constraints of finishing the Lighthouse Challenge, I didn’t get to explore the lighthouse and it’s grounds more. I was rushed to get these shots and the property was crawling with visitors. I wanted a shot devoid of tourists like me, which proved difficult.
The top shot of the lighthouse was taken from the rear of the house and I had to lie on the ground with my head wedged against a garden bench to get a relatively unobstructed view. I will be going back again to get more shots of this beauty some time this winter. This view was not well lit because it is the east side but it is the “best” side of the house. The sun was on the west side. I would have loved to get the shot in the morning light, but that was not possible.
The bottom shot was an irresistible little scene I couldn’t resist and decided to include with this post. It was at the edge of the dunes on the property just begging to be shot.
I want to thank everyone who has visited and commented on my blog, especially recently. I am thrilled with the response I've been getting of late. I am only afraid that I may disappoint at some point. I really feel like the pressure is on. But I guess if it moves me to be a better photographer then that is a very good thing.
My plans for my next in the series on suffering may be delayed due to seriously bad weather coming this weekend and I had really planned on doing the next shot in an outdoor setting. I will just have to wait and see and perhaps go to plan B.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

nie shots both of them,
i like the second shot better though,
well i love how you can write sooo much about your photgraphs,it makes for a very interesting read,
i usually end up writing only a few lines and thats about it....
These are both wonderful shots, and the black and white works well with this subject matter.
dont worry about any pressure on producing, it will come naturally
:o)
T
I like how the trees and the hedges frame the lighthouse in the first shot, that looks neat. Btw, I wouldn't worry about people not visiting your blog, because you have lots of great photos on here and you keep them coming. :)
I like both of these shots, especially the second one (probably because I am partial to wooden boats).
Your images are beautiful and you should be very proud of what you're doing here.
very delicate b&w.. beautiful...
Great !!!!
Ignore the pressure, don't dissapear, the photos are enjoyable no matter how frequent or infrequent they appear.
Whoever built this did a great job of marrying the practical with the artistic. And a great piece of history too.
Don't ask me why, but I absolutely love the bottom shot :)
Loving the monochrome feel of the shot.
Suby
Now that's the first lighthouse that I've seen that actually looks like a house!
I love the bottom shot and think that it would work in color, as well. I feel that the color of the flowers would be a good contrast against the bow of the boat.
Don't worry about disappointing anyone. Just say what you have to say through your images. We'll still be here ... at least I will!
This is an amzing light-house. it has a very European look ... and your capture is excellent. Wonderful Black-n-White here!
Thanks everyone!
I went with black and white for these because they were backlit due to the time of day were we there and that left the colors rather flat. But, when I looked at the image as a black and white I thought now that's going to work and went from there. I also have a fondness for black and white. I think that fondness was born out of the hours of processing black and white in my basement darkroom when I was a youth.
interesting b&w
Very cool shots. I'd love to start exploring lighthouses a bit more!
I love lighthouses and yours are beautiful. B&W is perfect for them.
Yet another great lighthouse shot Laurie. I like the first one a lot, especially the way you caught just a hint of the trees around the top corners. Gives a nice sense of perspective.
Beautiful, I especially like the second shot - it looks like such a warm and cozy corner to hang out in.
excellent couple of shots - i especially like the wonderful lighting in the second shot. fascinating to read the accompanying narrative too; i wonder why the name change from anglesea to north wildwood?
David that's a good question and I saw no explaination and didn't have time to speak with the docents at the Lighthouse as I was pressed for time to finish the Lighthhouse Challenge. I will try to get more info.
There are 3 towns with Wildwood in their name; Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, and North Wildwood. Probably something with absorbing the town of Anglesea for economic reasons. Not sure though.
"North Wildwood was incorporated in 1917 as a city from what had previously been known as Anglesea Borough and North Wildwood Borough."
I found the above info in Wiki. It did not elaborate.
Great shots, Laurie. The B&W for these is perfect. Nice job with the composition on both also.
Laurie, you have truly mastered the b&w conversion technique. Your b&w's are definitely among the best out there right now.
I don't know if anyone will see this, but I had a timely post for Halloween in cue, but Blogger is down, at least for those of us that post using an FTP server.
I'm sorry, I will keep trying to publish, but it seems that this has been going on for a while for some people.
Waaaaaahhhhhh!!!
I'm not a happy camper!
Blogger, PLEASE FIX THIS!
