Christmas Reading

Over the past few years it's become more difficult to find my Christmas Spirit. Maybe it's because the children are growing up and it just isn't quite the same as when they were little. Perhaps this year it's because the weather has been very warm. I'm not really sure.

I am an avid reader (when I have time) and one thing I've done over the past few years is to look for a little Christmas book to read to sort of help to put me in the mood. This is a picture of those books from the past 3 years. I have yet to get out and get this year's edition. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you all for the encouraging comments on recent posts. I am in a funk but I am determined not to let it get the best of me. Rob comes home Saturday and I am really focused on that right now so maybe that has something to do with it. I am preoccupied with my excitement at his homecoming and feeling a little overwhelmed at the same time with other things that are going on in my life right now.

I am a perfectionist and I am distressed that everything isn't "perfect" this year, ie. the house is a wreck (outside) because of all the work which has stressed me out so much, with no end in sight. For those that may not know, our underground heating oil tank leaked into the soil and water table causing us to have to do an environmental clean up which is a long, over a year at this point, arduous, stressful, frustrating, inconvenient, messy, and potentially bankrupting endeavor. (Thank God for tank insurance and homeowners insurance!!!)

This shot was taken in a little room, which is actually more like a very large hallway, between the living room and family room/dining room/kitchen in our house. It's a cozy little spot with a comfy sofa and a blanket to curl up on and read or have a game of chess or even a little cat-nap in the afternoon quiet before the kids come home, or on a lazy, rainy, Sunday afternoon.

A quick note on the last post; That boat was definitely wrecked. It was impaled on these huge beams which pierced the hull through in several places leaving gaping holes in her and cracking her hull extensively on the side which is out of the frame. If you look you can see an example of one of the beams across the aft deck. Below is a snap of some of the damage. Ouch!!!

i know what you mean about Christmas - the endless piped music and rampant commerciality of it all is driving me crazy - it all seems so false somehow, this forced geniality! perhaps the whole thing should be banned from being mentioned until the 18th December! Still, i'm sure we'll all have a good one when it finally arrives.

My favorite books are Joanne Flukes cookie murder books. Nothing gruesome, no foul language, a litte romance and a little comdey. Each has several cookie recipes that are all winners. The first in the series is A Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, but there is a Christmas one you could jump into first and then catch up with the others later if you wish. Sugar Cookie Murder. Check out her site here.

I think the endless inescapable xmas music is enough to drive anyone completely nuts.

My recommendation for a good holiday book is "Holidays on Ice" by David Sedaris. One of the most HILARIOUS books I've read. And it's short, so it's good for a quick read. If you do end up reading it, let me know how you like it.

Not to worry Laurie, the Christmas spirit, joy and fun are all there, they just waiting for the right moment to show itself :)

I love the capture of the books, I am an avid reader myself and this shot just appeals to me on all levels.

Great work, i like photos that tell a story, and your description with this photo work well! I find that while setting up the Christmas tree + playing Carols the Christmas Spirit comes best! Good luck!

It sounds like you need to go to that reading nook and snuggle down with a book and hot chocolate and give your self permission to just be still for a while. Sometimes things come together better after a little "me" time.

I am afraid I can't help with a book recommendation since it does not seem like I have time to read for pleasure any more.

The picture of the books is very nicely done. It gives a warm, cozy feeling.

Wow! That boat deifinitely has had it. Shame.

I know what you mean about Christmas spirit. I have none this year, except for the desire to drink rum and eggnog. Does that count?
