Playing the Bassoon

A while back I was trying to get some nice shots of Russell playing the bassoon. I discovered rather quickly that playing the bassoon doesn't yield very flattering facial expressions. Trust me they aren't too pretty. I decided to try some creative focus and just experiment a little to see what I would get. This was the result of one of the experiments.

I suppose if you aren't too familiar with the bassoon, this may just look random, but if you are familiar with the bassoon, then you can get the idea from the photo and it will make more sense.

I actually liked the abstract nature of this shot when I took it, but had held onto it for some months not sure if I was going to ever post it. I do like it, so here it is.

In other news, I have been able to talk to Rob several times on the phone this weekend. It was wonderful to actually hear his voice. He is doing well.

This is so different and original Laurie, one can't help but like it! I know I can't :) Wonderful shot from the experiment and something to go in the album for sure.

Interesting DOF. I wish there was a little more of the Bassoon in focus.

So happy to hear that you have been able to talk to your son. It does comfort a mom's heart and mind.
Great focal point of the tip of the bassoon. You are so right about the facial expressions. It is a difficult instrument to play.

Superb, I'm always a fan of music related shots and this one is fabulous. Your selective focus on the end of the instrument is brilliant.

Laurie, this is a great shot. I like the focus on the instrument and the 'implied' focus on the musician. Very nice. At first I thought, 'Oboe', then thought, 'Nope! That's not right.'. I was in the band and the orchestra, but it's been a while! :-) I was in the percussion section of the orchestra and a snare drummer in the band! Great times!
