Battle Monument
This is the Battle Monument in West Point. It was dedicated "in memory of officers and men of the American Army who fell in battle". It was dedicated in 1897 specifically to the soldiers from the Regular Army from the North who lost their lives during the Civil War. It bears the names of some 2.230 soldiers. The monument was designed by an architectural engineering firm that included one of the nations most well respected architectural designers of the 19th Century, Stanford White. It is said to have used the largest piece of polished granite in the Western Hemisphere. The figure on the top is "Lady Fame" or "Victory" and was sculpted by Frederick MacMonnies who also sculpted the Nathan Hale Statue in City Hall Park in New York City.
It stands sentinel over a most beautiful view of the Majestic Hudson River. It was not a beautiful day but I did so love the way this scene looked with the ominous skies.
I have other photos from our visit to West Point posted on Parallel Universe as well.

A very dramatic landscape!
I like the big grey clouds but there is still some sunshine on the statue.
Well done!
I like this shot. The background is excellent as is the sky. I live kind of close to West Point and have never gone to the area. Maybe one of these days!
What a lovely day. Nice shot!

Very nice. Great sky.
Very well composed as always. I like how the fore- and background create a great depth. The threatening sky goes well with the statue too :)
