Pretty in Pink and a Call to Action

This is another macro from my neighbor's flower arrangement. I just love flower macros. The softness that surrounds this one just feels soothing to me.

I have talked to Rob again, which is a blessing since everyday I talk to him is one day less to worry. But so far he's comfortable, he's even decorated his "home" which actually resembles a POD only with a door and a window, air conditioning and electric. He told me he got a couple of small rugs for it. I offered to send him a spring wreath for his door. He just laughed. I think I may just send one anyway.

Now I do have a vent I want to share with you all about an issue involving my son and his wireless carrier. I don't normally use my photoblog as a platform for such things but this really steamed me so here goes.

His wireless company is Verizon, and they offer a 6 month suspension of contracts/service as a courtesy for military personnel who are deployed. He set it all up and was told that all he had to do was give me permission to look into his account and call when the six month mark came so that they could extend it another six months.

I called Verizon today just to make sure that the phone was indeed suspended and that there was no outstanding balance. Everything was ok with that. I asked what I needed to do when the six months was up in order to keep his # and extend the suspension. The answer I got was quite shocking. I was informed that despite what they told Rob, their policy was that after the six months was up it couldn't be extended, it would just be disconnected and his # reassigned. Well at that I had to laugh, because the policy is ridiculous, understanding that a deployment like his was going to be a minimum of 12 months so the "courtesy they extend to the military" is totally pointless.

I argued this to no avail for some time until I finally was put through to a supervisor who had brought a manager in on it. I explained to them how utterly worthless their policy was since deployments are at 12-18 months. I did manage to get an exception for Rob, but I am now going to fight for them to change this ridiculous policy. I let them know of my intention to get the word out and try to rally for a change in this policy for all deployed military.

I know it's seems a small thing, but this # has been my son's # since High School, even before he switched to Verizon. He likes his #, all his friends know it, his buddies from Basic training and AIT training, and friends from college know it. The thing is these young men and women are sacrificing so much, is it too much to ask that a huge company like Verizon be fair about their policy for suspending their service for the duration of their deployments up to 2 years? It's a small thing to ask for someone who is sacrificing so much. At any rate, I just wanted to put that out there.

If anyone out there uses Verizon wireless and agrees that this is an absurd policy, please let Verizon know. If enough people speak up, maybe, just maybe they will change it.

Laurie, its no surprise that they came up with such a ridiculous policy. In reality, the first thing a consumer looks for is a discount or incentive of some sort, and this policy of theirs appears very tempting. But only on the surface. When the actual deadline approaches, we realize it's "catch". I have friends enlisted and two who left this year, both for atleast a year. By far, everytime we're told 6 months... it never really is that case. What if they return in 6 months and 1 day? The number would still be reassigned... corporations are pretty stringent when it comes to that! :( Oh well, I don't want to go off on a rant here, hehe. I don't use Verizon but I wholly support your view and your actions in bringing about the change. It won't be easy, but hey, someone's gotta check those companies and their "deals".

And as for your shot.... 3 (same) words: lovely lovely lovely. I love flower macros too :)

Beautiful colors. I love this shot. I can almost smell the fragrance of the flowers.

I don't use Verizon for cell service, but I do use them for internet service. Perhaps we can flame them with email to let them know how we think they're putting profits above patriotism. If it weren't for soldiers such as Rob defending their right to make a profit, they wouldn't be able to do so. They are taking advantage of the people that provide the umbrella of security and freedom that they (and the rest of us) enjoy.

First, an interesting and colorful photo!

Second, it's amazing what corporate America does to the normal everyday person. Even more that there people are over there fighting for what Verizon and the rest of corporate america stands for. I hope the policy is changed.

First, the macro is gorgeous. I love the focus on the edges.
Second, I just don't get corporate America most of the time. I don't use Verizon but you have a very solid point there and I think that the squeeky wheel gets the oil. So squeek and get all the other users to squeek too.

Hey Laurie - Charlie has been though the same thing on both deployments and had to get a different number both times!!! he too, has numbers going all the way back to high school, college, ranger, airborne, SF - all the contacts he needs - I AGREE, they could ( and did in your case ) be more flexible. I shall pass this on to Charlie ad have him mass email to all his military buddies! Thanks for getting up on your soap box about this one!!!!

On another note - I have another blog that is 2-1/2 years old and I put your b/w lilly on it today - it was the conversion I did, but gave you a plug and a link...
Happy Easter Laurie!

Great shot Laurie. I really like flower macros too. That sucks about Verizon. So frustrating how the big corporations manage to stick it to their customers every chance they get.

Quite stupid policy they got, why reassign a number, they must have plenty of them for the new users...
I like your flower shots, the bokeh on this one is amazing! Keep it up, Laurie!

Laurie, that Verizon rule is senseless. I bet it took a long meeting to reach that conclusion, too. I use Verizon, as do most of my relatives and friends, so I'll pass this on. Glad they made an exception for your son, but I think you're smart to push for change. I'll write a letter, too.

Love this macro! This type of photography is addictive--jamming that macro lens into a bouquet. I like the resulting soft focus.

Having so few focus points results in an 'pool of flowing colors', beautiful effect.

Laurie, this is really beautiful. I like the soft focus with highlights of the sharp focus. Has lots of impact. Hope that you figured something out with Verizon!
