Pipes

Sandy Hook is a strategically important location at the mouth to Lower New York Bay and the entrance to New York Harbor. Fort Hancock was an important Military installation that was operational from the 1800's until 1972. It was particularly important during World War II when it was of utmost importance to prevent German U-Boats from entering New York Harbor.

Sandy Hook is a lovely place to go and spend a day at the beach, particularly during the week when the crowds are smaller. There are many areas where you can walk and explore and see remnants of the old gun batteries, bunkers, Historic Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook Light, and of course the natural beauty of the Peninsula. It is also home to the only nude beach (Gunnison Beach) in NJ, not that I've ever gone there, at least not intentionally anyway!

This shot was taken last summer when we spent the day on the beach (not the nude beach either) and later went exploring. I had so many shots from that day that I never really went through. This is one such shot. This was shot on the bay side of Sandy Hook. Much of that side of the Peninsula is off limits due to some pretty treacherous conditions. There are crumbling bunkers and lots of rusted iron girders and re-bar and crumbling cement pads all over. It can be very dangerous, but it's also nearly irresistible to explore. Don't worry we pretty much heeded the many warnings that were posted and didn't take any unnecessary risks. I can't be certain but I think these pipes were probably remnants from when the military installation was still active.

I haven't been to Sandy Hook this summer, just been too busy although I will definitely be getting there in the next couple of weeks.

looks like the sort of place we used to play in as boys...the amount of times I was shot from a stick or blown to pieces by an invisible hand grenade..brings back memories, there was a time when you wouldn't have been able to stop me crawling up those pipes.

nice shot, and great story... some of the shots i have put up recently are of a nude beach, but without anyone there, but you have to get there early in the morning to achieve this... ;o)

funny enough, like padraig, these pipes brought me memories of childhood games - times before "things" became so important and you'd create your own scenarios.

I love to explore! That's so much fun. I'll keep checking back for pictures from the nude beach! ;-)

Years ago, we went to Jamaica. I didn't realize that we were on a clothing optional beach! :-) There were a lot of Europeans there, mostly Italian, and they had no problem at all getting a tan without the tan lines!

Lovely B-&-W ...
something that I fail at miserably. I never manage such rich tones. Excellent shot.

Culverts, memories of my time in the army. Aside from blowing things up in my "career" as a combat engineer, we laid hundreds if not thousands of these things, though ours were usually made of galvinized steel.

Laurie, I like the sharpness of this photo, and it's always fun to read your detailed descriptions of your photos--a true photoblogger.

Wanted to let you know that you've been tagged at Photo Buffet. If you don't have time, no prob...I just passed a tag on from Paul Lester and it was actually kind of fun. Eight things people don't already know about me--that's the theme. I've posted mine in today's entry at Photo Buffet.
