A First Time for Everything
How often can this saying ring true for us? I think the answer is unknowable. Do we keep track? Do we actually remember all of our firsts? I know I don't remember them unless they were a really significant event. The small stuff is largely taken for granted. This shot represents one of those smaller, less significant firsts for me. This is actually the very first fireworks photo I have ever taken and it was the very first frame I shot. I think I did ok. All of them came out to satisfactorily, at least no total losses. I do think I was a little too close or should have used my wider angle lens but there wasn't really the time to mess with moving or changing lenses. The show was kind of short for one thing. Not that I would have changed the lens on the beach anyway!
Every Thursday night in Point Pleasant Beach; "down the shore" as those of us in New Jersey say; they have a brief but beautiful fireworks show right on the beach. In all of my years I have never shot a fireworks display. Not sure why, I just never did. With Russell having the shows in Manasquan; one town over from Point Pleasant Beach; for the past couple of weeks, I've had to find ways to occupy my time for the 4 hours that I have to kill from call to the final curtain. There's no point in driving the almost 1 hour ride home just to turn around and come back so I stay and Mark usually comes with me and we make a night of it. Thankfully the show is almost over, only 2 shows left, because we are running out of things to do.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Suby
Splendid fire flower!
Superb!
Great shot!:)
Excellent work for a "first timer" and let me tell you, it's way better than my first attempt at fireworks!
Well, you did good for the first time, Laurie! Nice angel and very positive composition :) I just wish there was some more colored bursts like red and green! :D
Have a nice sunday too!
wow..! its GREAT for the first time,
fireworks is somehting i really havent had the opportunity to shoo, somehow i really dont know which lens to use,the 24-85mm seems too wide, the 80-200 seems to close,so by the time i compose and focus its gone..!
any tips?
@Shiv...For this shot I used my 28-70 f2.8 lens @ f/18 and a 10 second exposure @ ISO 400. I used the mirror lock-up and the cable release and just snapped and held the shutter open as long as I thought would be needed. I think I really just got lucky. I got to the location a little later than I wanted so I was sort of rushed and the show is brief, only about 15 minutes, so not a lot of time to think it through. The white fireworks overpowered the more colorful ones and there was more of the white ones set off than the color ones so not much I could do about that. It's fun and not nearly as difficult as I though it would be.
Nice crisp detail on the fireworks! I hope to shoot some myself this weekend!
Very nice, especially for your first go at it.
Great job Laurie. My little Cybershot doesn't do Fireworks well so its fun to see your sucesses.
Hang in there its almost over. Its a great support for Russell. He will always appreciate it.
perfect... absolutely perfect!
never taken one myself, and if my first comes out half as good as this then i'll be most pleased!!
Must be great at the beach! Perfect capture of it.
I think you did excellent! Well done! We don't have fireworks around here too often, so I don't get the chance as much. But fireworks are a challenge and fun!
