Sultry City
I want to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback on the last image. It is one of my favorites. Some people asked me if it was HDR...It is not. Most of the processing, curves and color balancing, was done in Lightroom. The only thing I did in Photoshop was to blend a duplicate layer in Multiply mode and then adjust the opacity of that layer.
I want to apologize for being rather scarce in my visits of late but I am preparing for a huge portrait project that is coming up in the very near future. I want to be fully prepared for it so I have been working on improving my studio lighting techniques so that I can do it quickly and efficiently and produce quality results.
This photo is sort of an experiment in unusual framing. It was taken on Sunday early evening while strolling along the waterfront in Hoboken just across the river from NYC. It was about 90 degrees, very hot, humid, and sultry. The air was so thick it seemed as if you might have to chew it in order to breathe it. A heavy haze lay over the city giving the city a soft glowing appearance as if looking through a very fine sheer curtain. I shot this through the tree branches because when I noticed this view it just really struck me as interesting.
To answer Padraig's question; the title of yesterday's post was in fact a reference to a song from the early 1930's written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Sung originally in the Cotton Club in Harlem NY by Ethel Waters. It was later recorded by various artists including Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. I do not know if it was ever sung by George Benson. I did however, make a mistake when quoting it. The word "ain't" is not used in that line of the song but does appear later. The line is actually "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky...Stormy Weather..."
NEWS FLASH_Nikon has introduced it's first FULL FRAME DSLR-the D3!!!!!!!!!! See preview here. I think I'm in Love!!! I can't wait to see it. I know I won't get one any time soon but I am dying to see it field tested!

I'm not a city guy, but that is a nice shot. You captured the "stickiness" of the air very well in this shot.
I'm looking forward to seeing your portraits after you finish your project. I hope you'll share them with us.
very beautiful shot...love the composition and beautiful blue tones.
best wishes for your portrait project!
Superb night shot. Looks very peaceful from afar...
Good luck with your project.
Love the shot of The City. The composition and framing are perfect. Really nice evening shot.
the branch reminds me of a lightning strike; seems to suit well the heavy atmosphere.
I like the framing of this, it definately adds to the mood makes me think of spies or james bond for some reason. Re george benson, I don't know it is the same song, as this is the only version I have heard, I think he used the line "tell me why theres no sun up in the sky.....stormy weather"
Something ate all the detail there =(
szche...you should have read the description and info on the shot...the city was shrouded in a heavy haze from the Sultry day...actually very much like this one of yours: http://szche.ru/photo/53
Lovely view to stare at :D
I like the framing for sure.
I like how the leaves are framed by the buildings.
Lovely eveningshot.Great compo.
The lights and colours are awesome.
See you like the new D3...
I am still waiting for the 1DMKIII (Canon, sorry I am one from the "dark Side" I guess) to get firmwared out of the serious focus issues...then I might buy...or...
Maybe wait for its upgrade...?
The 1DsMKIII is way out of my league and (wallet)

Bonjour,
Well done shot..Good composition and tones..Bravo!
Nice composition Laurie. I do miss NYC
I have tried that sort of framing more times than I can remember, and it NEVER works for me, but you got it to work here. I think it is because there is not a huge contrast between the branch and the background. Nicely done.
What a beautiful summer's evening shot, Laurie. Bravo!!!
Hi Laurie! I echo the others... perfect composition, very beautiful photo. !
leaves silo has a lovely effect and the background is qually attractive...
Laurie, this photo makes me gawk. You've captured the different lit-up structures with such beautiful clarity! Even the boats in the harbor are lit, and it makes me wonder about the conversations taking place behind all those windows.
