Fishing in Round Valley

previous / next

The weather has been muggy and overcast with scattered rain, quite a lot of it actually since around the middle of last week. It just has not been very nice at all. Despite the weather people were still out and about determined to eek out some summer recreation wherever and whenever they could.

We took a ride out to PA and ended up rained out pretty much. We decided duck into a brew pub for a quick bite and a beer while we waited out the rain. The rain let up some but it was still drizzly so we called it for the day.

On the way home as we neared Round Valley the weather perked up a bit. Well, at least it stopped pouring, and even stopped drizzling. So we decided to take a ride down to the boat launch and look at the reservoir to see if there was anything interesting. It was pretty quiet but there were a few hearty souls determined to enjoy the day by pursuing their hobbies, fishing and boating.

This was shot at about 8:30 on Saturday evening. The light was fading fast but it was really quite pleasant there.

A well-done photograph. The depth-of field is splendid and colors fantastic.

I love that state of mind. Too bad I don't have it today. You could have had some fun with this photo but making that sign say no fishing :)

Wonderful focal point and subject, and good use of dof too. :) I wish I were with him, fishing instead of work...oh, no, wait, I'm surfing. ;-)

I like the composition of this shot and the dusky atmosphere. Good picture inspite of the uncooperative weather.
Today its just plain hot here. 110F.!!
Tomorrow its predicted to hit 111F. Between the heat-wave and all the smoke from the many wildfires, inside is the only place to be today.

Ah the weather ... a favourite topic of we Brits... mainly because it is often not as expected...or wanted. Speaking of which we seem to be having a monsoon without the warmth..not a great start to July!. For a minute I thought the sign said "No fishing" ...must be old age settling in... why "no swimming" ?...will it upset the fishermen ?

@Roger...I actually entertained the idea of doing that, but I decided not to. I am too lazy.

@Photowannabe...I've been following the news about the fires...it's just dreadful. I hope things calm down soon.

@Jasp...Round Valley is a man-made reservoir and it is sometimes referred to as the "Bermuda Triangle" of New Jersey. There have been a number of drownings there some of which the bodies were never recovered. So it (the main area) has a reputation as a dangerous place to swim.

My high school photography teacher actually died there a number of years ago. They believe he had a heart attack while fishing from his boat and had either fallen or jumped in for a swim.

There is a designated area where people can swim complete with a fully equipped bathhouse with showers, changing areas, restrooms, first aid station, and concessions. There are also picnic areas with BBQ grills, and tables, playgrounds, and volleyball courts. There are lifeguards on duty and a sand beach. I've boated there but never swam in it.

They also allow scuba diving from April to October. They have strict rules for that.
