Dizzying Heights

previous / next

This is a view from our seats at the Yankees vs Orioles game on July 30, 2008. I took this before the game started. The stadium was still filling and had over 54,000 fans which is pretty typical. I thought photographing this guy carrying beer while trying to negotiate his way to his seat gave a pretty dizzying perspective. While the seats we had were up high, they were decent seats behind home plate and the best part in the shade the entire game. This fact was really important because it was muggy and in the 90's.

Mark and his brother are big Yankee fans and get a package of tickets every year. This year his brother had a couple of occasions where he could not make the games. I have never in my life been to a Major League baseball game. This summer I got to go to two in as many weeks. When Mark asked me my initial response was "no". I figured either Russ or Jon would want to go, but they declined which left me feeling bad for saying no. So I thought about it and decided that it would be nice to participate in something that he loves so much. I had a very good time at the first game I went to on July 23 and the Yankees beat the Twins 5 to 1.

I did not bring either camera to the first game because Mark told me they did not allow large bags or backpacks into the stadium. The weather looked iffy and severe storms were in the forecast so I didn't want to get caught with my D200 (even though it is weather-sealed) in the rain and the Olympus is not weather-sealed at all.

As it turned out they have relaxed the "no backpack, no large bag" rule. So for this game on July 30, I decided to carry my Olympus E300 and the smallish bag I have for it to the game. I was glad I did. I got some nice photos for Mark's scrapbook and I might be able to make some nice prints for the game-room.

I really enjoyed myself and would definitely go again, perhaps a night game next time.

Oh, by the way, the Yankees beat the Orioles 13-3.

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

Check out my other Photoblog portfolio/archives:

Hot day, few beers, watching a game with friends. Sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon to me.

That is quite the perspective! I've only been to one MLB game in my life. I'm certainly not a fan, but the time that I went, I had a great time. We sat in the outfield, ate nachos, drank beer, and talked! What more could you want?! To top it of, the tickets were only $5 each!

Its been years since I went to a MLG myself. It was fun. There's a certain crazy atmosphere that kinda gets under your skin.
Glad your team won...it makes things all the better an your Hubby happy.
Great picture of that fella going to his seat.

First, the photo. I really like it and the perspective. Sharp. I like that the ticket is in his one hand, too.

Second, the Yankees. I can't stand 'em. :) (No, I'm not a Red Sox or Mets fan!)

Third, Yankee Stadium. As a major baseball nut (I live near Cooperstown, so I am next to so much history of the game), I have never been to the Stadium. I am going to attempt to get to a game in September so I can be at a game one time before they shut down the stadium.

How nice that he turned this way for you. This is a terrific document of a Yankees game. America is not lost, I see it here.

A great photograph and perspective, and one which strikes a chord with me.

As an Englishman with a Candian clan over in BC, and close ties with the USA, this is something I so want to do, and for various reasons still have not!

A baseball game, or hockey game in a stadium with all the atmosphere and excitement, the beers and hotdogs and all the trimmings..... What could better or, indeed, more American.

I'm back over to Canada and the USA in three weeks time for a month, so you have spurred me on. This time I must make the effort and chalk another of the 'things I want to do before I die', off that list... ha ha :-)

This photo takes me back to spending many summer afternoon/nights as a kid watching the Orioles' AAA farm club play (except no beer then) -- the Charlotte (NC) Orioles. Many fond memories. Congrats on the magazine photo!

Such a depth! It's nice to sit down in stadium and have beer! In Norway it's not allowed! ;o)
