BOO!

previous / next

Boo!!!

Happy Halloween!

It's creepy in the moonlight. Enter if you dare. Go ahead...you know you want to!

OK I confess this wasn't actually shot in the moonlight. It was shot in broad daylight. When I was doing the black and white adjustments for the image at one point the sky went to nearly all black and I thought, wow that almost looks like it was shot during a bright full moon. So I went with it.

This is actually a house I know quite well. It breaks my heart to see it in such a state. When I was a child I ran in it's halls while my Uncle would jokingly (I think) stomp is feet and say gruffly that children should be seen and not heard. Meanwhile my Aunt spoiled me with little trinkets and treasures.

It was actually a grand old farmhouse. To me it was magical with all the antiques and wonderful treasures in every elegant room, and its grand staircase and fireplaces. To a small child it was larger than life. I was especially fond of this giant calliope music box that was very much like this one. It played tunes from these large metal disks that were stored in the bottom of the case. I don't know what happened to it.

Years before my Aunt died, not long after my uncle passed, she had turned the huge property over to the Hunterdon County Park System with survivorship rights so she could finish out her days there. She did not want to see this beautiful open space developed with McMansions and strip malls. The park is called Hoffman Park and I visit there regularly.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.

Check out my other Photoblog portfolio/archives:

Well done on your treatment of the house. Its sad when something so personal starts to decay. I'm glad you can keep those good memories alive.

Spoooooky!!! Great work with the processing as well, you really made it look like fool moon lighting. Thank you for sharing the story, so sad you have to see it decay like that.

Good choice to create the picture the way you wanted it. It's look great. The barrel distortion adds to its charm and fright!

Great shot and post processing treatment. The atmosphere was perfect for Halloween! I am so sorry that you have had to watch this beauty's decline. It is sad that it couldn't have been maintained!

Goodness, Halloween feels like such a long time ago already, but I just have to add my comment! The subject is great, the tones are right on, and bloodyhell that looks scary! Good one. :)

Great effects on this one! And I'm glad your aunt felt so strongly about not allowing the place to be torn down and built over, even if it is decaying. How lovely that you can still visit there, too.
