Me Myself and I

previous / next

Ugh! I cannot believe I actually posted this...I should have taken it down and done something different. The more I look at it the more I think it's just too ummm...contrived. But oh well what is done is done.

Yes, that is me. Finally a self portrait that I am willing to post. Some of you may have already seen this since I posted it as my "about me" photo almost 2 weeks ago.

I do not like having my picture taken. I really don't. So you can imagine how difficult it was for me to finally get a self portrait I am satisfied with. It is pretty hard to judge everything for a self portrait. My cable release was too short, I didn't have the right connector to connect my pocket wizards for triggering the camera and flash, only the flashes (another gadget to add to the ever growing list). Setting up the lighting so that it hits you the way you want it to is difficult at best, particularly the hair light. But after several frustrating tries I think I achieved satisfactory lighting under the circumstances. And then of course there is the pose...ugh! That was by far the worst part of it since I couldnt "preview" the pose in the viewfinder, and I am not comfortable posing. Of course my hair was not quite so mussed when I started this thing. Most came out pretty bad and goofy and were immediately deleted before they could get into the wrong hands, namely my kids, who would likely use the failed images as a way to blackmail me. I am not totally happy with the pose but all things considered I'm ok with this one. I hope you like it.

News:

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.
Check out my other Photoblog portfolio/archives:
Well, I'm not going to critique a photo you took of yourself except to say that it's very nice. I may need you later if I post a self portrait of my own! If you were going for sultry redhead, you nailed it. Honestly, very nice. And I'm sure it's 'as shot' with no pp!
@Michael Paulison...Thanks. I won't lie, there was some PPing going on here. About what I normally would do for any formal portrait. I didn't go too crazy though. I still have slight bags under my eyes...grrrr...I did have a LOT of makeup on, for me at least anyway.
I wasn't going for sultry but that's what I got. That part actually makes me a little uncomfortable...That is so not me. I am really a rugged, outdoorsy type, not at all a girlie girl.
I hate posing! LOL
I will agree it looks a little bit contrived. BUT--and this is a big but--for a self portrait, it is more than good. Not that I have tried to do many of myself, but I have never taken a self-portrait that is even half as good as this one. The lighting is really good. And you'd never guess the subject was the photographer.
well if it was intended as a professional portrait then it's perfectly fine is it looks a little contrived... it's a REALLY good selfie
I think it's great to get to put a pretty face with the name on these blogs! Arranging all this yourself is a tremendous handicap. I think you succeeded very well. The trouble with photos of ourselves is that we're not generally satisfied with ANY picture of ourselves. It's something like hearing your own voice recorded. You look very attractive to me!
OK, I'm with you. I HATE getting my photo taken (usually). And I give major props on a self-portrait. I don't see why you'd worry about this one though. It's sharp and very well-done.
I'm giving major props just because you said you don't like having your photo taken. Good job!
Hi Laurie, I'm glad to meet you. I think this is a great self portrait. Beautiful red hair and sultry eyes. You may not have been going for sultry but your eyes say it all.
Glad you were brave enough to post it. I'm so not ready to do that yet...LOL
I'm totally with you on taking self portraits! Or any picture with me in it for that matter :) Let's just say I don't hold very well on film or pixels :) Despite the things you mentioned in your story I think you did a good job :)
Shooting ones self is so tricky...we are rarely happy with what we see...nice effort...nothing to be ashamed of!
Ok, how does one add a wolf whistle to the comments section? LOL I think your portrait looks wonderful, Laurie. I have to commend you for shooting a self portrait, especially a sultry one. I think it turned out great. Having had the privilege of meeting you, I don't think any photoshopping was necessary.
The lighting here is great. Just enough of a soft, subtle shadow on the long side to add shape and definition and a nice amount of "snap" in that gorgeous red hair with the hair light, which separates you nicely from the background. I think you did a very nice job. One small change I would have made would be to keep your fingers together, and not separated like they are.
Laurie, you did good! I think all of us prefer the other side of the camera. Good for you for getting on the "receiving" end - and it is a lovely portrait.
getting on this side of the camera and then posting it is hard. so bravo for doing it! like the others i like this. doesn't hurt to explore different sides of ourselves - like sultry when we are mainly outdoorsy. i like how you look here - as you say slightly uncomfortable - makes you seem like someone who has humor about herself and who would be a good person to share a drink and a laugh with.
Hey Laurie - I saw a tiny little thumbnail of this on VFXY not too long ago and thought "that looks great but I wish it where bigger so I could see it" and look what appears. Wonderful SP, nicely lit and very expressive. Now you need to do the rugged outdoor pose.
Laurie, you're beautiful. It's nice to see what you look like. Taking one's own portrait (I think) is VERY difficult as I've tried with little success. You did a great job.
