Sandy Hook Butterfly 1

previous / next

Earlier this month I spent an afternoon in Sandy Hook. The day started out nice but was getting dreary by the time I got there. However the day was still not lost. I managed to get some decent photos because the light was not too harsh or too flat.

The fall colors are definitely starting to pop, especially on the Goldenrod...ACHOOOO! and the very vibrant poison ivy...scratch, scratch...no I didn't actually get poison ivy, although there is plenty there...whew!

The Monarchs were extremely active and there were plenty of photo ops with them. I am posting 2 of them. This one was taken earlier in the day under thin clouds in an open area. The next one was shot in a more wooded area, later in the day under a heavier overcast.

News:

This photo of the Bucknell Football field is a 2 page feature photo in the Fall 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.

Check out my other Photoblog portfolio/archives:

A gorgeous butterfly shot. I especially like how you included the expanse of flowers as a setting for the butterfly's image. Nicely done.

The colors are somptuous and the butterfy seems to have a dress designed by a cubist painter.

Laurie,
Are the trees changing a lot up there? We're debating if it's too soon to go to the Water Gap this weekend or not.

@Jeanine...I just checked the foliage report for the area and the Gap area is still not there yet, at least according to the Weather Channel.

I can tell you that where I live, East Central NJ, it is still predominantly green although I haven't been out all week. I've had a really nasty cold which has kept me down.

I did talk to a client in Central PA about a job I have next week and they said the colors are really getting beautiful there so maybe in the next week or so the GAP will be great.

Love the butterfly, by the way :)

I have been seeing mixed reports. Justin's (Gaynor) latest post shows tons of color and he's central NJ, I thought.

What to do, what to do!

Lovely shot. Very saturated, sharp and an almost glassy look. Cheery for someone with a cold.

@Jeanine Justin is a little south west of me. Like I said, I was sick all week and I haven't ventured out any further than across my little town all this week. So I am just really going by what I see out my windows and in town which is still not peak. There is color but it its pretty spotty.

I can say that by this time last year color in the Water Gap/Skylands area was spectacular, but no year is the same.

It's been really warm here. I have yet to turn on the heat. Today is supposed to be the last warm day so maybe the colder air will push the colors. Good luck.

Butterflies are pretentious. Looks at this one which stops and takes the right pose, just to have the pleasure of being photographed by Laurie...

Love the background which just adds to the Monarch.

But Laurie, don't blame the goldenrod for your sneezing fits. That flower gets the rap when the culprit is really ragweed. See http://gardengrow.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/canadian-goldenrod/ :-)
