Closing 2008 Looking Toward 2009
Good year? Bad year? Interesting to say the least. As I look back on 2008 I would have to say for us personally it was a good year overall. We had many positive milestones, and goals reached, and managed to put some bad things behind us.
I have mixed feelings for the coming year. I am fairly certain my oldest will get deployed again under "Stop Loss". He is due to get out after his 4 years active duty in the Fall of 2009. Now it seems unlikely that he will get out until late 2010. That is my biggest fear for 2009, and the reality is that it is unlikely to change.
The photo was taken on a photo meet up with Russ Devan and Betsy Barron back in Sept. along the Delaware Canal. It is one of the huge wooden lock doors that controlled the level of the water in the canal when it was used for barges. The Canal bed was empty while repairs were being made to the canal tow path after several years of severe floods basically destroyed it. A local resident told us that the repairs were almost complete and that section of the tow path was to re-open soon.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.

Superb image!! WOW!
I think 2008 has been pretty good to me and my family....I hope 2009 with continue that!!
Nice image for the close of the year. Onward to 2008.
A wonderful image for the end of the year, superb black and white and therefore very suitable for weighing the positive and negative aspects of future and past.
My best wishes go with you and your family for a bright year 2009 and I do hope that the better options we have in this multi-faceted challenge get chosen by all of us.

i like the mood you've captured here :)
I really like this picture. I just noticed that most of your recent pictures were taken with the D700. That camera is on my shopping list for 2009 to replace my D80. How do you like it in comparison to your D200?
@Mr. Mapper...I left you a detailed reply on your site. I hope it helps!
Very appropriate threshold shot for the end of the year. Moody with jut the right amount of tension.
Hope you and your family find safety on the other side.
Great capture. We are ready to say goodbye to 2008 around here, looking forward to a new year. Happy Holidays Laurie!

A magnificent door opens on the nature, a true magnificent garden.

Fantastic composition, lighting and processing. It brings to mind the lyrics of that old song, "should I stay or should I go"! Wonderful work!

What a great image. It's so easy to imagine the weight of those gates. Wishing you all the best for 2009.
A very nice b&w image. Love the textures and the overall simplicity of the composition. Very well seen.
I always enjoy images that make you want to walk further into them to explore. This one is certainly no exception. Nicely done.
