Deserted Village in Light Snow

previous / next

This is a shot that I took on New Years Eve in Watchung Reservation about 20 minutes from my home in NJ during a light snowfall. I had not been here in years so I thought it would be interesting to see if anything had changed.

We didn't go too far because it was bitterly cold and windy. I did see that some of the old buildings had been restored and others were boarded up and seriously decayed. I hope to go back when it is a little warmer but also snowing because the snow does make this a magical place.

There is not a lot of information on any of the official park sites about this place. I did read that at one time there were 175 people living there. Now I believe there are only 3 families living there. The village consists of eight houses, a church, a carriage house and a general store, and a small graveyard.

I believe this building once housed a general store downstairs and a church upstairs.

Nice shot and interesting building. I think it would be great if you could take some photos indoor.

You are right, the snow changes the landscape completely.

@TP...Thanks...I would have liked to get some interiors, but it was not open to the public when I was there. I know they do some special events from time to time but there was nothing going on this particular day.

It’s a pity that these wonderful old houses are dilapidated. Very nice photo which strengthen the impression of abandonment.

Wow, beautiful capture!
The snowfall created softness and muted colors add a sort of elegance to it.

What a wonderful place. I love the colors they used to paint it and the rustic log railings. Its a shame the people have moved.

Breath taking, at least to me and I can only speak from a standpoint of knowing what I like. And I like this, a lot. I'm inspired by it and hope I can achieve something like it some day.

What a lovely winter postcard. I just checked Lostinjersey, and found more info about this place. Sad story, too bad it's not more actively preserved, it sounds like an interesting historic site. I will have to go and have a peek when the snow melts.

Such an interesting building! I can only image it filled with things and people in a by-gone era. Excellent composition - I love how you captured the falling snow.

I can't stop looking at this amazing structure. Your picture makes me want to learn more about it.

From the way you've capture it, I can practically see how it was used if I squeeze my eyes shut just so. As ever, lovely, lovely perspective!

Nice building. That top deck looks like a great place to sit out, relax, and enjoy the woods (when it is warmer out of course. :-) )

Wonderful harmonious colors - the muting of the snow in this context creates a wonderful quiet effect which matches well the situation of an empty house.

I would love to find a place like this around me... that "forgotten place." Very interested and a good capture. I'd be interested in seeing the older graveyard, too.
