Ice Crystal Fern

previous / next

This was shot a week ago on January 16 on what was probably the coldest day I can actually remember. I found this tiny ice crystal on my back window and thought it looked a little like a fern. It was no more than one inch across its entire length and this crop is only a very small fraction of that.

The clarity would have been better if I had been able to shoot it from outside. It was on the outside of the window and I thought about braving the brutally cold temps (for about a nano-second) to get a cleaner shot from outside, but since I would have needed a ladder and wouldn't have been able to use my tripod I knew that would have been futile. So I decided to shoot it through the (double paned) glass.

I did use a macro but decided to do this close crop because when I looked at the zoomed in view of it in Lightroom I liked the way it filled the frame. This was also converted to black and white because there were some little color gradients that I found slightly distracting.

Very good. It looks so 'biological'. Its amazing how water and pyhsics can create patterns - and they are always different..

wonderful. I like the hard borders between black and white. This and the enlarging makes it go way beyond just taking up the form. Instead of showing, this transforms.

I had no idea you were running parallel sites, so I looked at aminus3 too. On balance I think I prefer the way this looks on there, because of the black background, but I like the gentle frame here more.

It's an amazing picture, it's fascinating how ice crystals grow - and you're right, it does look like a fern

Wow Laurie, this is stunning. I can picture this framed. I've never had frost on my windows yet to even attempt this. Exceptional work.

Nice. Ice crystals are hard to photograph. I tried some today, still trying to process them. BTW your tutorials are great, straight to the point.

Great shot, I really enjoy the contrast between the crisp crystals and the smooth, flowing forms. And for me the B&W adaptation is just perfect for this type of shot...

Beautiful! Looks just like an etching. I like the way the "fern" flows, it's very lively. Well seen, and well done!

It has a great pattern to it, and I think the B/W choice really brings out the details.

I absolutely thought this was a fern or some other plant covered in ice rather than ice crystals on a window. Very well spotted and captured.

One of the joys of photography is that it gives us the opportunity to capture images we wouldn't normally see. This is a wonderful piece, very graphic and intricate in it's design.
