Gun Battery Gates
previous / nextThis is one of the old Gun Batteries at Ft. Hancock in Sandy Hook. We had been walking along the beach and followed several foot paths. One of which led to the top of one of the gun batteries quite to our surprise. They are supposed to be off limits to the public for a very good reason as they are crumbling and very dangerous places.
After walking along the top of the battery for a while we noticed the park rangers coming toward us chasing people off so we walked back down the path to the beach and back around to the rear of the batteries. There are fences at the back of them to discourage the public from going in and exploring. By the time we made our way there the rangers were down along the fence. We talked to the rangers for a few minutes, who were very nice. They regularly have to chase people off and out of them but they don't get nasty about it since the access is so easy especially from the beach side and they understand the "cool" factor allure of the place. The fences are also not terribly secure as most of the gates are broken or open from previous trespassers.
How I would have loved to go inside of one of the gates!

Yeah, I also would be interested in the inside of this building. The play of light and shades are great. Very well spotted.
I love deserted and mysterious places... excellent composition Laurie, the light that filters through the trees is beautiful...
Beautiful contrasts and great b&w shot.
Both in NJ and finally we meet up! I have Ft. Hancock on today as well! It's about time.
This is a nice shot and really needed to be black and white. Nicely done.
Now, let's see if we can one day get the same shot up on the same day!
Creep in when no one is looking next time Laurie :) Live life to the fullest, if caught, you don't know us LOL
Lovely shot here.
Too bad that you don't have access to these photogenic structures. Out here, I've had full access to batteries even when I thought there was real danger in falling from high heights when exploring them. I like the additional texture provided by three shadows.
Take your hard-hat with you next time just in case. I'm pretty sure you must have one in your beach bag already though.
oooh. My verification word is "bowells". Nice.
@torekimi...lol! Sorry I have no control over the captcha word verifications...lol I've noticed some pretty strange ones over the last couple of months myself.
I actually do have access to a hardhat. I have one somewhere from years ago and my husband has one from his work. I may have to toss one in the car!
The details and contrasts are truly amazing in this image. Love how you composed this shot. Captivating lines and patterns, excellent job on this one Laurie!
Great shadows and textures. Seems like a great area for pictures.
Excellent in b&w... too bad they didn't let you inside the building...
Excellent b&w photo. Rich tones and good frame.I like that those doors are not placed symmetrical in your frame.
great composition on this one. nice shot, as usual!
Les vielles pierre donne toujours une réalité de la vie.
Cool place you have found here, looks like an old prison.. And it works great in black and white!
remarkable black and white, so much detail.
A very interesting picture and comment which explains the gates. A fine picture. I especially like how rugged the gates are shown and the fine detail you camera provides. Well done.
Great composition on this Laurie!
Very nice shot

Very cool structures! I like how one of the gates is open and the other shut.
Wonderful composition - but the processing is superb! It could almost be an old jail.
That is such an awesome shot. I love the fact that you have it in B&W.
I would have liked to see the inside too. Hubby and I have hiked the Batteries by the Golden Gate Bridge. They are full of rustic photography places.
I love the black and white treatment of this shot Laurie.
it does seem that you've had quite an adventure there.. love the gritty feel of this shot.. :)
beautiful sun and shadows in this
Well... finally we see your house... ;-)
Good picture in B&W.
Laurie, those do have a very high cool factor! :-) As soon as I saw the picture I thought that it would be a great location to shoot portraits!
Very interesting and beautiful black and white photograph!

how come you didnt go inside? :)
terrific picture... this structure seems to need some maintenance !
Fine one !
