Iona Island Marsh
previous / nextOn Saturday we spent the afternoon in NY State along the Hudson River in Bear Mountain and the surrounding areas. It had turned out to be a beautiful day. It was not terribly cold with the temps around 40° or so and light winds. We even enjoyed a picnic lunch in Bear Mountain State Park.
This shot is from Iona Island in the Town of Stony Point in Rockland County. We just sort of stumbled upon this place while exploring the roads that wound through the mountains. We found the old Iona Island Naval Ammunition Depot which is now a winter sanctuary for Bald Eagles but is closed to the public between Dec. 1 and March 31. Apparently public access is severely restricted throughout the year and from what I understand you need special permission to enter the main portion of the island. We did not see any Bald Eagles on this trip. Well that is not entirely true, we did see one in the small zoo in Bear Mountain State Park earlier in the day...not quite the same thing though.
This area of NY is not very far from where we live...perhaps an hour or so drive. I lost track of the travel times because we did so many little side trips. It is very close to West Point which we visited on several occasions last year. It is a really beautiful area with much to see. I don't know why I haven't spent more time here but that is definitely going to change.
For more information on the area go here, here, and here.

Gorgeous!Look at that sky and the colour of that grass stuff. Wow!
very relaxing landscape... Light is wonderful!
I love blues and tans in photos! You've elevated dead grasses to a beautiful shot. The Winter, browns and mud still inspire you after all.
I hope that birthday business is going well for you.
Wow beautiful landscape photo! I like the way the sun is coming through the reeds.
What a wonderful landscape !!
Wonderful lights.
I would have liked being there to visit and for the picnic lunch in this magnificent place.
Wow! Laurie, what a wonderful light!
I just love the way the backlight makes the efflorescences glow - a wonderful scenery.
Wonderful capture; the light *is* beautiful.
Talk about a beautiful shot of a beautiful location. I love the light off of the marsh grass. Every time I see that type of light, it makes me want to pull off the side of road and take a picture. If I did that all of the time, I wouldn't get anywhere!
Really nice, Laurie! This one speaks to me, promising to spring to life in the very near future!!
The golden tones of the grass is stunning. Wonderful composition and landscape photo!
28 mm the focal on a splendid landscape I still want it
Amazing colors !
Looks like an unspoiled place.
magnifique photo emplie de couleurs chaudes, le cadrage au ras de l'eau met en valeur le paysage, les couleurs nous transportent et le paysage porte au rêve, merci pour cette échappée vers de tels horizons.
yes awesome

very nice
Typically the place I like to be when I want to be alone :)
great uncontaminated landscape, i love the blu of the sky and the yellows of the flowers.
The gold color is just fantastic here.
beautiful lines in this
Gorgeous Nature shot, Laurie. I love the colors :)
it's good to have enjoyed the trip outside.. and being able to capture nice shots like this must be satisfying.. nice shot.. :)
Looks like a nice area indeed. Often we overlook things that are between close and far. This gives me an idea. Say we were to post photos of things or areas one finds within and hour or so from where we live, maybe a little longer drive if one lives in the inner city. Maybe I'll mark up a map with Minneapolis at the center and then find destinations radially about an hour out. Put some discipline into my randomness.
I really love the blue blue sky against the browns of nature!
Laurie, this is really, really stunning! Everything about it is perfect.... the beautiful, graduated blue sky, the light in the weeds, the sweeping feel of the composition... VERY nice.
Hi Laurie
Another great winter landscape, great control of the light abd love the composition!
regards
