A Single Tree

previous / next

I have photographed this tree several times over the years. You can see 2 of those shots here and here. This tree stands alone in this spot which is just a little spit of land , a jetty more or less, that sticks into the bay across from NY in the Atlantic Highlands. You used to be able to go onto the jetty but they recently replaced the fencing and gates which now extend into the water preventing access, unless you don't mind getting wet to get there. I shot this from a restaurant parking lot that is adjacent to the jetty.

wonderful golden light, and the bird really makes it, optically and also metaphorically: flying away whilst the tree has to stay there in the cold, waiting until spring...

this shot is wonderful... I love nature compo so much! The light in here is fantastic and thin lines of the branches and of the vegetation.

Beautiful afternoon light Laurie. I think it is too red for morning light?

There is a nice flow in this image, and the bird is that extra little touch that makes this image great!

Nice light. It's always fun to photograph the same object at different times to record how natures changes the landscape from season to season.

Of the three pictures I like this one the best. The tree is leaning inwards, acting as an anchor for the image; the bird is at exactly the right place - to tie in with the tree and the rushes look as if they're deliberately mirroring that movement. The colour is glorious, the light just right to enhance the right parts of the picture and disguise some of the foreground clutter.
It's a lovely image.

Of the three images I find that I like this one the most (which is surprising to me because the one with the colored sky is fantastic and the other features water which I love). The entire composition here just comes together for a very powerful image. All the elements are working together. Really nice!
