Taken From the Top II

previous / next

A different view from the top of the gun batteries. I think the hole is where the huge guns were mounted and the steps were how the gun was rotated...but I am not entirely sure.

Great pic again, I love these old fortifications.. as time passes the function becomes less and less clear. Which is odd, a 400 hundred year old castle shows its form and function, probably because it was at a human level, men with swords and bows... while the change in technology of war, leaves with us structures we can only wonder at. In my part of the world we have many WW2 defensive structures that just leave you wondering why and how they would have worked. But then they take on a new life as a sculptural forms and curiosity's...

I like this capture... Sometimes reportage-pic are so hard, they leave a sense of wrong, but at the same time they are so fascinating... we can imagine a lot...In this case I can see the guns as you said.

This is a really nice series, Laurie. Each image gives a historical mood that takes you back in time. Well done.

OR... it's where the service people put on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Obviously, it reminds me of an ampitheater.

Anyway... This is a nice shot. The contrast works really well here. It gives it a documentary feel.

I'm going to call you next time I go here so you can navigate me to this great place.

Hi Laurie,

Very beautiful capture that reminds me the ruins of the German's Atlantic Wall (defense line of bunkers from Belgium to Spain) of the WWII in France.

Looking round old forts and fortifications is fascinating, and is a feast for the imagination too.
From what I've seen here in UK I'd think your idea is about right, it would have been a huge long range gun/canon possibly on a rotating platform.
The little windows might also have been used for smaller weapons - rifles and so on.
Lovely detail here Laurie.
