Working on the Railroad

previous / next

I am continuing to make my way through the backlog of images that I had not posted but intended to. This is from November in New Hope Pennsylvania and the New Hope Ivyland Railraod. These are the guys that run things. From the looks of it they were changing shifts. These guys always look happy so it is my guess that they love what they do.

I like this shot and the subdude colors. I always like shooting pictures of trains and we have a great historic train museum here in Sacramento.

Fantastic colours on this one (don't know if it's the processing or your exposures, but the blacks really squeeze out the blues/purples and I love that about it). Bravo

@Ian...Thanks...I adjusted the white balance toward cooler tones in the RAW conversion in Lightroom and if I remember right I adjusted the curves in LAB color which I do from time to time.

Your train beats our train - at least in the "shiny and well cared for" department. Nice shot

Child, with my brother we looked down from the bridg at steam engines, then we had many black tracks on the face.

I like this engine shot very much with its steam and smoke. The action in the shot adds much to the enjoyment. The fellow looking down from above and the two talking. Very nice image.

Really interesting and seemingly contrasting layers of era between the foreground and background. those guys and engine look like they could be from many decades ago while they housing in back seems contemporary.

wow - almost a cibachrome look with that deep, fat black. I might have tried to brighten the shadows, but I must admit here this black works excellently!

@ Markus Spring...Thanks. The original had a lot of detail throughout, including detail in the deepest shadows. I chose to lose detail in those shadow areas because for me this shot was about those men and their interaction. The original is actually very different from the final image, which is somewhat of a departure for me since I typically tend toward more moderate processing. I even went back and revisited the original today to have a look and I was quite surprised to be reminded of how much different it looks.

I think most of us are seduced by steam - it always seems so very physical.
