Abandoned Diner

previous / next

This is an abandoned diner I have passed a few times and have wanted to stop and take a couple of shots. I did just that a couple of weeks ago. I only had the chance to get 2 shots because the wind was so relentless I was getting pelted by gravel and I had difficultly just keeping my balance. I am determined to go back and get more before it is razed or fixed up.

I like this you can feel the past there, the good times the happy events that must have occurred there.. you are left wondering what will become of it... but this image captures it in a time..

A building was abandoned, it is a little bit sad, but photos are beautiful.

A old Diner!!! Right up my alley.... Great mood capture on this.

What did you use to process?

@Mary...Thanks...I did the color adjustments in Lightroom, just the normal RAW conversion stuff like white balance, color balance and curves. Then to accentuate the shine of the chrome siding which still retained a surprising amount of sheen for the state the diner was in, I added an Orton layer with a very low opacity...no more than 25% opacity.

Love these classic "eastern" diners you don't see much of here in California. Wonderfully processed. More, more, please! Even ones still in biz.

Fantastic shot! Sad to see this decay, but it does make for excellent photography.

Orton layer, 25% opacity? Is this in Lightroom?

Very nice. It's very evocative of the feelings of decay and loneliness. I think the 'Diner' sign on top really makes the photo. It's just wouldn't have been quite the same without it.

I'm thinking it's going to go the razed route. :)

You did a really good job in bringing that green out in the processing! The overall tones and feeling are perfectly captured!

Definitely a moody and evocative shot. There are many points of interest here. I love the old TV antenna. Like the green lines. The place is just beat up! Nice capture.

Really lovely find, Laurie. And your processing really brings out the glow of the chrome beautifully.

What a story in just one photograph. This is a perfect depiction of what is happening in so many towns nowadays. Very sad but i sure do like the photo with its decaying colors.

The diner is an important fixture in our state. Go anywhere else and you feel that they are missing. the retro diners complete with stainless steel are fantastic. The processing and camera work on this really shows it off.

A kind of scene that we can see in America, not really in the middle of nowhere as we can see a nice house behind. You have given it a nice treatment.

We were both out in this windy weather, Laurie. I was being pelted by sand and you by gravel. Stunning shot of this fascinating old diner. The ones in our area have all closed down too. Excellent sharpness and details.

Seeing this wonderful photo of an old diner makes my mind race and ask all kinds of questions--its story and history, who worked there, what were their stories and how did the diner come to such disrepair.

Excellent!

What a great photo. I've seen lots of abandoned diner shots, but this diner looks like it's lost all hope. The black streaks look like mildew, the dead weeds, looks like an empty lot is coming soon. The only detraction, in my opinion, is the "Available" sign on the roof. The splash of red is the only brightness in the shot.
