Death Row Gates

previous / next

This was taken on a photo meet up with Betsy Barron, Dan Creighton, Pat Shorten, Ed Heaton, Kelly Heaton, Paul Michko, Lindsay, Russ Devan, Russell Jackson, and Mark (Sherpa) Jackson, at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia PA on June 5, 2009. It was raining and nasty out which was the perfect weather to be in this place. Check out the slideshow page for more.

Nikon D700
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4
1/100 second
F/4.5
ISO 6400
50 mm

Check out my new slideshow page. The link is here and at the top and bottom of every page. I am testing out several formats for the slideshows each with their own advantages and disadvantages. It will be an evolving process and I will add new ones from time to time. I hope you will stop by and check them out and feel free to leave me some feedback.

I want to take a moment to express my sympathies for the people of Iran during such turbulent times. I hope and pray that they have their voices heard and that the terrible violence against them is ended. I am including some links in this post at the request of a fellow photoblogger.

Very evocative, almost emotive in its simplicity...stark and forbidding interior, yet the light gives hope. Nice!

beautiful colors and tones in this - it if weren't for the fence it would have a chapel-like feeling.

i'm sure this is not a happy or peaceful place and yet your image brings out a peaceful or at least quiet feeling.

wow, i just finished viewing the flower slideshow. it's amazing! i love them! do you use a specific type of lens for those shots? or you use different lens for different shots? how do you set up those with the black backgrounds? do you take the photos in a studio or something?

@pao...Thanks I'm glad you like them...If I set out to do flower shots I typically use my 60mm f/2.8 macro or my 50mm f/1.4 prime. But many of those were shot with various other lenses. The ones on the black background were shot outside in bright sun with the background (the gray wall of my house) in the shadows...because of the harsh contrast between the bright sun and the deep shadows and the distance between the subject and the wall...perhaps 8 feet and I used the macro...the background fell into blackness. I do have a light tent and studio but I have not used it for most of those flower shots because most of them were done outside under natural light.

The series is amazing. Quite compelling. I would love a chance to go through a building like that. I believe there is an old mental hospital in Illinois that has been photographed in this manner, too, but I don't know what permissions are required.

Like the dark contrasts and the view through the fence, definitely creates an eerie mood which is perfect for this place. Great slideshow. Perhaps opening a new window when view the slideshow would make it easier to navigate back to your main page.

@John...lol...it's funny you mention to have it open in another window or tab...I did have it that way but my kids have been telling me it is really annoying how I have all my link tabs opening in separate windows/tabs...I have it set up in the template...so I didn't do that in the individual posts only in the link tabs in the main blog template...I changed it back again...I'll see if it annoys anyone besides my kids...lol.
