Oh Deer

previous / next

It figures...The day before I got this shot I drove all the way to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in search of wildlife to photograph with my new lens set up with the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR and the 2x teleconverter and all I came away with were some images of geese...gee I could have gotten those anywhere! So I took a walk a to my little park, which backs up to a 10 lane highway and what did I get within just a few minutes? Well as you can see...I got this beautiful doe.

It is not terribly unusual to see them but they are usually running or really deep in the thicket. This doe let me come really close to her. At one point we were within 10 feet of each other. I reached out my hand to her and she sniffed the air and seemed tempted to come closer to sniff my hand but thought better of it and went back to the business of nibbling the leaves. She was totally unconcerned with my presence and would only glance at me occasionally.

I am still getting the hang of using this lens set up. It is a bit of a learning curve and I was shooting handheld with it...not too bad. I haven't used a tri-pod with it at the time of this writing, but I am planning on doing that soon...I have an aversion to tri-pods so it is not my favorite way to shoot. I feel somehow disconnected when I use a tri-pod.

I just found out that someone tried to hack into my Gmail account...Grrrr! I discovered this when I tried to log in only to find that my (saved) password had changed...hmmm...so I discovered that someone tried to do a password recovery...I think they failed though because they would have needed to access another email account I have somewhere else to retrieve the reset password. I think it was just someone being a wise @$$! And I don't think they actuallly got access. Gmail details show no activity from any other computers for the account so far as I could tell. At any rate if anyone notices anything strange in their SPAM folder or regular email coming from my email address let me know...especially if it is dated later than today. I apologise to anyone who may be affected by this.

I want to take a moment to express my sympathies for the people of Iran during such turbulent times. I hope and pray that they have their voices heard and that the terrible violence against them is ended. I am including some links in this post at the request of a fellow photoblogger.

Check out my new slideshow page. The link is here and at the top and bottom of every page. I am testing out several formats for the slideshows each with their own advantages and disadvantages. It will be an evolving process and I will add new ones from time to time. I hope you will stop by and check them out and feel free to leave me some feedback.

Beautiful shot. I agree with you they are always busy running. It is very difficult to get them to pose for a snap. Very nice.

Beautiful shot, Laurie. That is pretty funny that you finally got the shot that you wanted nearly in your own backyard! :-)

Regarding the tripod, I feel disconnected if I'm not tied to one. Strange. I guess that it has to do with whatever you have gotten used to.

Tripod? That's what the VR is for. Though using a 2X TC does stretch it. With the amount of light you had here it should work fine. However, the less light, the less likely the AF will work on this setup.

She is a lovely creature. Deer are curious and I've had them walk up close to me. Spring/summer they are not as spooked by people and she is probably used to seeing them because of the location.

@stphoto...Thanks...The AF is pretty fast so far under most of the conditions I've shot in but when the AF is slower in low light the manual override on the lens is extremely useful...I use it a lot anyway in all sorts of light...just as an insurance policy. I love lenses with the manual override. I also love the 3 focus lock buttons on the end of the lens. A very useful feature.

Awesome! What a perfect capture. Looks like you don't need the tripod. And you know, you should try a monopole. I bought one and love it.

@ alexandra...Thanks...I do have a monopod and do use it with some regularity. It is way more useful to me than a tri-pod. I prefer it over the tri-pod.

It broke a few weeks ago (the threaded reducer got stripped). I finally got around to replacing the part just the other day. I kept forgetting that I needed the part when I was at or near a camera store.

This is really unusual to come so close to a deer. Sharpness, DOF and colors are excellent. Like the title.

Absolutely gorgeous shot, Laurie! The light is just perfect. And I'm green with envy that she allowed you to get so close. Didn't she react to the sound of the shutter? I guess not! :-)

I'm sure others have said it but..... the lighting on this is just spectacular. It feels very quiet and intimate. The blurred background is beautiful as well.
