Last Sail

previous / next (10-16-10)

I shot this a few weeks ago in Maurice River Township NJ near East Point Lighthouse. It was an absolutely gorgeous evening. I love this secluded location although the bugs are a little difficult to deal with.

I processed 2 versions of this both of which I really liked. One I processed the RAW file with the "as shot" custom pre-set white balance and this one which I warmed up a bit. I kept going back and forth between the two. My son Jon broke the tie. He said the triangle of warm light on the sailboat was really nice even though the colors in the sky on the other were really cool too. I think he was right.

After reviewing some feedback I've gotten about this warm version of "Last Sail" it seems that despite what Jon and I think, the cool version is the preferred version of this image. So in an effort to please everyone I have gone ahead and posted the "cool" version which you can view below.

Ok...well you all convinced me. This is not something I usually do but below is a hybrid image combining the best elements of both. It is a subtle difference but I like the warmth of the sand tones here and how the blue of the sky has a bit more pop. Let me know what you think.

Gorgeous scene and perfect lighting. Not sure what the other white balanced image looked like but the warm tones here really shine.

Both are beautiful images, but I still prefer the warmer image.
