Broad Winged Hawk

previous / next (8-26-11)

I'm not sure if this is a Cooper's or Sharp Shinned Hawk or something else. I'm pretty sure whichever one it was a juvenile. I spotted this one in Vermont on a wire across the highway from Bromley ski resort from where this shot was taken on the same afternoon against this backdrop.

EDIT: Buckeye tells me this is a broad winged hawk. I am no expert but I did see one the other day just up the road from me in New Jersey. I had read that Broad Winged Hawks migrate in the winter so I suppose the one I saw last week was mixed up.

Great detail. Look at the intensity of the eye. Natural hunter! Great sharp frame.

It's neither. It's a broad-winged hawk, adult.
