Fledgling Blue Jays
previous / next (6-9-11) I was leaving to run an errand when I noticed a baby blue jay behind my car. I shooed it away to a safer spot and left for my errand. When I returned I saw it was where I left it so I figured get my long lens and take a couple of shots. When I came out my front door I noticed the two other siblings sitting right next to my garage only steps from my door so I took a couple of quick snaps. I was careful to keep my distance while mom and dad kept a watchful eye but they never sounded the alarm so they did not seem to feel threatened by my presence.
They seemed a bit young and immature to be out of the nest but having seen one the previous day that was managing flight ok I was thinking perhaps they were going to be ok. Unfortunately my suspicions were confirmed Saturday morning when I found 2 of the 3 deceased next to my day-lily garden. I do not know how they came to be turned out of their nest so soon. I am not sure where their nest had been and whether they had been blown out of the nest during the couple of windy days we had last week or if mom and dad were a little premature in pushing them out. Unfortunately nature can be cruel that way.
