GWB in Black and White

previous / next

I really need to thank everyone for the overwhelming response to the previous image. It received an amazing 78 comments at last count, 25 here and 53 over at Capture This Photography 2 (formerly known as Parallel Universe) I am really, really flattered by the amazing response it received. Thank you!

Now I have a hard act to follow I suppose...Hmmm...

I really don't know where to start with my backlog of images, but I don't want to post every day either. I like posting every other day because I find it more manageable.

I picked this one of the George Washington Bridge to start moving away from Jersey City. I love this bridge and there is a wonderful park that runs next to the river on the Jersey side and under the bridge. This was actually taken a few weeks before the Jersey City photos but I was anxious to do the Jersey City series so I set it aside.

The weather was not great that day and in fact we got caught in a violent storm as we were driving out of the park which made it a little scary with all the tree branches falling, the rain wind, lighting and thunder, and the sheer cliffs next to us. I felt worse for the bicyclers and hikers that got caught in the storm.

News:

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.

Finding Peace Under the Old Tree by the River

previous / next

This is an old gnarly tree along the riverbank in my little Mohawk Park. It's a lovely little spot, so serene and peaceful. It's the kind of place that I could easily sit and read, or just let my mind wander.

Wow...10 days since I posted last. Well, it's been kind of busy here. I always say that things will calm down soon but they never do. I will try to catch up with everyone in a few days.

Rob will be home very soon, exactly when? I still don't know. I have a link to the incoming flights and the welcome ceremonies. There are now 5 listed in the next 10 days or so and more are added regularly, but I don't have a clue which one is Rob's. They said they would let me know as soon as they could. I'm really hoping I can be there when he steps off that plane in Georgia!

Abandoned Mill Near Princeton

previous / next

This is from a couple of weeks ago. It was taken on a chilly winter morning near Princeton. It was really cccold that day and I was having a hard time finding inspiration and motivation to shoot.

I've been really distracted lately with lots of stuff going on around here. It's been difficult to focus on photography lately and to find the time to get around to visiting all my photoblog friends. I must apologize. I keep thinking I will get caught up but it just isn't happening right now.

The Reveal

previous / next

Wednesday morning dawned foggy. I was very excited since fog isn't terribly common here, at least not fog that hangs around long enough for me to drop the boys off at school and then go out to shoot. Usually it's lifted by the time I finish with the morning chaos, but this time was different. It actually seemed to get thicker as I drove my morning route to drop the boys off at their respective High Schools.

The fog slowly lifted to reveal the splendid Fall colors by the Rahway River in my little Mohawk Park. I was very damp and raw cold but it was well worth a little discomfort and some doggie pies that I didn't quite manage to avoid...Grrrrr!

I have a few photos from my foggy morning stroll that I will share here and on Parallel Universe over the next few days.

Ecosystem

This is another shot from our Saturday afternoon visit to Ken Lockwood Gorge. While we were there we met a young family who were exploring the ecosystems of small pools along the edge of the river. They found crayfish, freshwater clams, snails, small fish, and other fascinating creatures.

Rural Decay-Old Mill

Actually, I'm not 100% certain that this is an old mill. The fact that it's right on the water leads me to believe that it was. It is across the river from where this was shot and across the street from where this was shot.

I've been really swamped the last couple of weeks and this week in particular. Between concerts, the usual lessons, auditions, recitals, and music library stuff, admissions testing, and all sorts of other stuff. It's been tough to find time to do the photography for the photoblog. Hopefully, after this weekend things will calm down a little bit. (Yeah Right!!!)

Jon has a recital on Friday night where he will perform the Dancla 3rd Air Varie "Norma" on violin which is the same piece he will be playing at the Regional Orchestra Auditions on Saturday. He's ready! I think it will go well since he's well prepared and can play "like an angel singing" as his teacher put it a couple of weeks ago. He was also going to audition for viola as well, but just wasn't quite there with the audition piece for viola. He only started playing the viola last summer. Violas are in higher demand because fewer kids play them than violins so the advantage would be less competition for him. The auditions will be tough. There is a lot of truly amazing talent out there and some extremely accomplished young musicians who will all be vying for spots. Literally hundreds of kids turn out for this and it's not easy. Russell has participated in the past and it was a wonderful if not stressful experience, but the competition for bassoon is a bit less than for violin, simply because there aren't that many bassoonists out there, but the ones there are, are very good.
