Blue Berries

previous / next

But they are not blueberries. I don't know what these are but the bright colors really caught my eye. This is the last of the shots from Sandy Hook...for now...maybe.

ETA...I've been busting at the seems because I just got a new camera this past Saturday...A Full Frame Nikon D700...Wow! What a great camera! I do a lot of very low light handheld photography for orchestras at ISO 1600 with my D200. The results have usually been pretty good but I've wanted better. Well now I have it. I haven't had time to really get out and use it since I have been busy processing photos from the assignment I was on last week, but tonight I had to take my youngest to his orchestra rehearsal so I thought I might just try a couple of shots to see how well it works in very low light at high ISOs. I can report that it performs well beyond what I had hoped for. You can see an example of a shot I took in the dimly lit rehearsal space in the basement of a church shot at ISO 6400, 1/125 second @ f 2.8 handheld with ZERO post processing by clicking here. This is just a quick snap I took and it is only an email quality JPEG that I exported from Lightroom without any post processing.

Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers. I have also changed the title of Parallel Universe to Capture This Photography 2.

Beach Palette

previous / next

...or is it beached pallet? I shot this one at the North end of Sandy Hook. I saw this odd thing from quite a distance and thought it was a crate of some sort when I first saw it. I had to go investigate and found this pallet randomly stuck in the sand. I'm not sure how or why it was stuck in the sand like that.

Yellow Bucket

previous / next

Taken the same day as the previous in Sandy Hook. It was a warm early fall day and there were quite a few people out and about enjoying the final moments of summer-like weather. The bucket and other gear belonged to a couple of guys who were fishing. I saw them walk up the path and when I was leaving there was no sign of them other than there gear and the sounds of their voices beyond the tall grasses and shrubberies.

I will be away for a few days on assignment so I might not be able to respond to comments. I do have some photos cued up for posting while I am away.

Salt Marsh

previous / next

Shot the same day as the previous Sandy Hook photos. Sandy Hook is a really beautiful place especially when the summer crowds have gone. There are no amusement rides on boardwalks, games of chance, arcades, or fancy hotels, or rental houses. There is one Restaurant/Bar at the South end and a few snack bars here and there but that is about it.

What Sandy Hook does have is some pretty pristine areas for hiking, biking, roller-blading, and exploring. Beautiful beaches for swimming, water sports, and lots of fishing. There are some interesting historical points of interest including Sandy Hook lighthouse and Ft. Hancock and the North end along with views of NY. Oh and of course there is the nude beach...no I don't go there, at least not on purpose, although I did accidentally stumble upon it one very chilly early April day...and yes there were people in the buff on the beach even though I needed my ear warmers, gloves, and winter coat.

I will be away for a few days on assignment so I might not be able to respond to comments. I do have some photos cued up for posting while I am away.

Water Safety

Pretty self explanatory. It was shot in Sandy Hook the same day as the previous photos. This was shot in the same general area on the South end of Sandy Hook as this one.

East Point Revisited

previous / next

This is a shot from the archives that I found when I was doing some housekeeping on my computer. It was shot at the same time I shot the East Point Lighthouse series last June. Its a really beautiful place and I met this gentleman in the early dawn hours of what was a pretty overcast morning when I was there shooting. He said he comes there every morning with his coffee and his dog saying that there was really no better way to start the day. I can see why. I would love to be able to start each day in such a peaceful and tranquil spot, but this place is about a 2 1/2-3 hour drive from me.

It was a pretty busy weekend. I didn't do much shooting for the blogs. I did shoot a concert and might be able to post some of those. I did post one from a concert last week on Parallel Universe which can be seen here if you are interested.

Winds of Change

Fall is here but the weather has been pretty warm. It seems like summer is somewhat reluctant to let go. There are just hints of colors on the trees teasing me with the promise of things to come.

Pumpkins and beautiful fall Mums fill the produce stands and garden shops. Scarecrows and other Fall and Halloween decorations are popping up around town. Mostly I am just counting the days until Rob comes home on leave. Less than a month now and he will be home for a few weeks. I will spoil him rotten when he is here!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month so I just wanted to remind everyone of the importance of regular self exams, mammography, and anual checks by your doctor. For more information here are several links:

Please pass on this information to your family, friends, and co-workers. It's very important and could save the life of someone you love.

Off Duty

The lifeguard stands are empty and sadly the carefree days of summer break are all but gone. The cool nights of September are here. Back to school shopping is being done, a task the kids groan about and yet there is a little excitement evident on their faces when we hit the stores as well. The fall schedules are in order and it's time to get down to business. By the end of this week my house will be very quiet between 7AM and 3:30PM. I will miss them being home.

Russell will be a Senior this year. Jon a freshman. Big years for both. This will be a year full of new things, changes, and challenges as they both face opposite ends of the high school spectrum.

They are growing up so fast it's taken me by surprise. My boys are becoming fine young men right before my eyes and I am very proud of them.

Ain't No Sun up in the Sky...Stormy Weather...

This is a shot from last Monday. It was another cloudy nasty day but the atmosphere was awesome for photos like this one. We were in such a dreary weather pattern for the last week. It was pretty cool too with temps in the 60's for a high. The sun came out for a little while yesterday for the first time in a week, but it was short lived. It was still really overcast but it did become quite hot and sticky. Today was just plain gross. Hot humid and still overcast for the most part. I really hope the pattern improves because school starts soon and I would like to go to the beach with the kids before they go back.

"7"

This was shot about 1 hour before the previous photo just as the fog was starting to roll in. The boat off in the distance almost looked like it was just suspended there.

I am back from visiting colleges with Russell. It was long and stressful. I have come to the conclusion that all the info sessions and tours are from the same script with the exception of West Point.

This trip we saw Skidmore in Saratoga Springs New York and Ithaca in Ithaca New York. Russell liked Skidmore although it is even a bit small for his liking with only about 2300 students. He is looking for colleges that are small but with between 4000 and 6000 students. There was a lot that he liked but it sounded a little discouraging since they have an acceptance rate of less than 10% and this year they expect the highest ever number of kids applying to colleges in this country ever! Figures! They also have only 2 scholarships that they offer and it's the most expensive school he's visited thus far.

He was less enthusiastic about Ithaca unless he is definitely going as a music major but as of this moment he is still undecided and Ithaca didn't impress him as much as the others in the sciences which is an area of interest to him. However he did like the idea of possibly combining music with business, so it's still a possibility and there are more possibilities for scholarships. I personally didn't think the campus was all that nice compared to the others we've seen thus far. Russell also wasn't to thrilled with the campus and location. I will say that the music program does sound good and we liked the music school facilities very much.

We still have a handful of schools yet to visit and investigate so we will be busy with this for some time. It is so very stressful! I am tired from all the driving walking and just plain overwhelmed with information overload. I need a good night's sleep in my own bed I'm exhausted!

Foggy Flight

This was taken on Saturday early evening as the fog was coming in off the ocean. These gulls were scared into flight by a grooming machine that was cleaning the sand after the sun and sea worshipers had left.

I will be visiting colleges with Russell over the next few weeks so please forgive me if I don't get to visiting the photoblogs often.

A First Time for Everything

How often can this saying ring true for us? I think the answer is unknowable. Do we keep track? Do we actually remember all of our firsts? I know I don't remember them unless they were a really significant event. The small stuff is largely taken for granted.

This shot represents one of those smaller, less significant firsts for me. This is actually the very first fireworks photo I have ever taken and it was the very first frame I shot. I think I did ok. All of them came out to satisfactorily, at least no total losses. I do think I was a little too close or should have used my wider angle lens but there wasn't really the time to mess with moving or changing lenses. The show was kind of short for one thing. Not that I would have changed the lens on the beach anyway!

Every Thursday night in Point Pleasant Beach; "down the shore" as those of us in New Jersey say; they have a brief but beautiful fireworks show right on the beach. In all of my years I have never shot a fireworks display. Not sure why, I just never did. With Russell having the shows in Manasquan; one town over from Point Pleasant Beach; for the past couple of weeks, I've had to find ways to occupy my time for the 4 hours that I have to kill from call to the final curtain. There's no point in driving the almost 1 hour ride home just to turn around and come back so I stay and Mark usually comes with me and we make a night of it. Thankfully the show is almost over, only 2 shows left, because we are running out of things to do.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Summer Memories

Thanks all for the wonderful "Blogday" wishes on my last post. I'm so glad you are all out there and visit so often.

After the last shot which definitely portrayed Winter, I decide to go to the archives and find something totally opposite to suit my mood. This shot is from last August when we all went to LBI (Long Beach Island) in NJ for a day together as a family while our son Rob was home on leave. I did crop this photo. There was a bit too much going on to the right of the frame when I looked at it, and I preferred to have just the two kids in the frame.
