Jersey City Pigeon

previous / next

Of course no city would be complete without at least one pigeon. Funny thing is I don't remember seeing any others. Maybe they were at the concert I mentioned over in Liberty State Park.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

Big White Birds

previous / next

In my last post I was complaining about the winter. Well we finally have snow, not a dusting, not a slushy sloppy inch or two but real significant snow!

The phone rang twice this morning in the pre-dawn hours to let me know that the boys would not have school because of snow. When I looked out the window everything was white. Of course the boys are very happy to sleep in today. I won't lie, I was pretty happy to be able to roll over and get a couple of extra hours myself.

There is about 4 inches already and I am anxious to get out my winter gear, and venture out to take some photos. My camera is weather sealed but I am going to fashion a jacket for it just the same before I go out.

This shot has nothing to do with the snow other than the birds being white. I shot these Great Egrets AKA white Herons at a water front park in Perth Amboy about 1 1/2 years ago.

Foggy Flight

This was taken on Saturday early evening as the fog was coming in off the ocean. These gulls were scared into flight by a grooming machine that was cleaning the sand after the sun and sea worshipers had left.

I will be visiting colleges with Russell over the next few weeks so please forgive me if I don't get to visiting the photoblogs often.

Gliding

I've been doing anything but gliding lately. It's just been too hectic, and I'm feeling exhausted! Russ finished the 9 performances at NJPAC and now it's time to start at Algonquin Arts in Manasquan for 8 more performances over the next 2 weeks. Manasquan is "down the shore" as they say here in NJ which means shore traffic. We thought to have him stay overnights for the Saturday night and Sunday matinée performances but the cheapest hotels that were reputable were $200/night! Anything we found cheaper had 2 night minimums @ $160/night, or not recommended by the theater company. This means commuting the entire time.

I am looking forward to the possibility of wandering around for a few hours while he is doing his performances. I think I will go to the beach and maybe take some night shots while I'm there. I will have about 4 hours to kill each of those days after all.

The Birds

We frequently get large congregations of these extremely noisy and messy black birds called starlings in our neighborhood. In the summer they are a problem, especially if you have a lot of trees and want to enjoy your yard. We had a few large trees near our deck which provided nice, natural, cool shade, but come early evening you had to retreat to the indoors since the birds would come to spend the night in those trees. Between the noise, which was bad enough, and the droppings, which were intolerable since it fell like rain, there was no way to stay outside on the deck under the shade of the trees or in the yard to enjoy a summer evening. The problem was so awful that I would have to scrub the deck and deck furniture with bleach just so I could allow the kids to play out there when they were small. It was really disgusting and frustrating.

Our neighbors had the same issues and between us, we tried all sorts of methods to try to drive them off. We used high frequency noise machines, cap guns to scare them, nothing seemed to work. We were told that if we just trimmed and thinned the canopy of the trees it would cause them to search for heavier cover and would still preserve our shade...well it sounded good but didn't work. In the long run, we ended up removing and trimming away the trees that hung over the deck just so we could use it at all.

This was taken a few weeks ago right from my front door. This was a "small" flock compared to what we experience in the summer months.

*I am aware that my archives are broken I've been trying to fix them for several weeks and have been unable to. Blogger has been completely unresponsive to my repeated requests for help. I know the problem is not anything that I have changed since they worked fine between August and December and I've changed nothing in my settings that would affect the archives. Unfortunately Blogger has very poor technical support and they send an occasional form email telling where to look to troubleshoot including Google groups, which I've tried to no avail. In the meantime I apologize for any inconvenience to my visitors.
