Fisheye Football

previous / next

This is a high school football game I stumbled upon on my way out of the city after shooting all the photos in the Jersey City series. I had to stand on a block that just happened to be there and shoot through an iron railing. This was the best perspective I could get in among the people that were standing along the railing with me. I have to say that I thought it was a great way to end the day and the series.

This is the final shot in the Jersey City series. I know it was a very long series. I pre-posted all of the shots in this series because September and October tend to be very busy months for me. I have a lot of shots that I've taken over the period of time that this series ran and it will be interesting to pick out which ones to post as the backlog of images grows and grows.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

Grill Open

This is another shot of the funky bar, nightclub, Sand Bar USA, in the previous shot. It is such an odd place. There are a number of these couches sort of randomly placed around. I'm sure the place attracts a young crowd. There were only a few people there when we stopped in but I really get the sense that the place is a popular energetic night spot.

I want to take a moment to say thanks to the people who sent me supportive emails and messages. It means a lot to me.

I have taken my VFXY account out of hibernation and re-activated it.

Sand Bar USA

Is open! There is a funky bar/night club located on the waterfront in Jersey City next to the Marina in the previous shots. It is quite large and has a lot of outdoor areas complete with plastic palm trees, a sand beach, and some unusual furniture. We were there early in the afternoon so it was pretty quiet but judging from the looks of the place it is probably hopping at night especially in the summer. We stopped for a beer at one of the outside bars. We did not venture inside although it must be quite large with 2 dance floors and several lounge and dining areas.

Ooooh! Nice car!

I'm not much of a car person but this one caught my eye as it rounded this Jersey City street corner.

Light Rail

One major improvement that has really made a difference in Jersey City is the Light Rail System. It was opened to the public in the spring of 2000.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail offers service from North and South Hudson County into the downtown Jersey City waterfront and Hoboken. The light rail trains provide transpoprtation for residents and employees, throughout Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City, West New York and North Bergen. It also serves as transportation to business and shopping centers including Exchange Place, Newport Centre and Hoboken. It will also connect passengers to other transit alternatives such as NJ TRANSIT buses and trains, the NY Waterway ferry, and PATH trains to New York City.

The Men That Build America

This is probably my favorite photo in this series on Jersey City. I walked past these three men, construction workers, on the street while they were waiting for their ride after a long day working. The man standing called out to me "why don't you take a picture of the men that build America?" Of course how could I not? The men and women who build this country are the backbone, the very soul of us. These 3 guys were very proud and very pleasant to chat with. I thank them so much for allowing me the honor of taking their photo. I never did catch their names.

I had my fisheye lens on the camera and I warned them that it might look a little strange, but I was pleased with the powerful perspective it gave this photo.

Skyscraper

previous / next

This is one of the many skyscrapers in Jersey City. More are being built all over the city. There are construction sites everywhere. It's good to see in this city during these times.

HIgh Rises Etc.

previous / next

Another in the Jersey City series. This one shows that the city is pretty typical of what you would expect to find in terms of the tall buildings and wide main thoroughfares. The streets also are very clean. From my observations it is a tidy city.

This was taken around 6 PM on a beautiful summer Saturday so the streets of the city were pretty empty.

Jersey City Brownstone

previous / next

First I should probably mention that I know this is a bit strange looking and that is because I shot it with a fisheye lens. What a fun and tricky lens to use.

This is one of the wonderful buildings in Jersey City that has been part of the rejuvenation of this renaissance city. I just love the windows and the railings on this building. It is a nice combo of old world charm and the modern city. Jersey City is a more affordable alternative to NYC living. Many young professionals are making the move here, and not just from NYC but also from the Suburbs for the easy commute into NYC.

My husband has worked in and around Jersey City many times over the years and he has seen the city change so much during this transformation. There is still much to be done but it is definitely wonderful to see the continuing progress.

Jersey City Parking Dings

previous / next

Continuing my series on Jersey City and Jersey City Parking, it's a given that parking dings and dents are all too common a sight on cars around any city. But those are the risks of having a nice car in a city.

This is a lovely tree lined street in the city with wonderful brownstone townhouses and apartments. I loved the color of the doorway in the background of this shot. The entry looks so inviting.

PS...I should probably mention that this isn't my car.

Jersey City Parking

A few weeks ago I went to Jersey City to look for photo ops. I had been hearing so much about how wonderful the waterfront area of the city has become and I hadn't really had the opportunity to explore it. I will tell you this, I love what they have been doing and it is really becoming quite a lovely waterfront city.

Jersey City is conveniently located directly across from Manhattan and is a very easy commute. Many young professionals have moved here from Manhattan for the lower cost of living. There are lovely townhouses and high rises and many of the neighborhoods are experiencing a wonderful renaissance.

One of the things that goes along with city dwelling like this is the problem of parking. It didn't seem to be as bad as trying to park in Hoboken, another neighboring, wonderful, waterfront city in NJ, but it was still not like parking in my little suburban town.

This is the first in my series on Jersey City. I have many photos and I'm not sure how long the series will run. I hope you enjoy this little peek into Jersey City.

Sultry City

I want to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback on the last image. It is one of my favorites. Some people asked me if it was HDR...It is not. Most of the processing, curves and color balancing, was done in Lightroom. The only thing I did in Photoshop was to blend a duplicate layer in Multiply mode and then adjust the opacity of that layer.

I want to apologize for being rather scarce in my visits of late but I am preparing for a huge portrait project that is coming up in the very near future. I want to be fully prepared for it so I have been working on improving my studio lighting techniques so that I can do it quickly and efficiently and produce quality results.

This photo is sort of an experiment in unusual framing. It was taken on Sunday early evening while strolling along the waterfront in Hoboken just across the river from NYC. It was about 90 degrees, very hot, humid, and sultry. The air was so thick it seemed as if you might have to chew it in order to breathe it. A heavy haze lay over the city giving the city a soft glowing appearance as if looking through a very fine sheer curtain. I shot this through the tree branches because when I noticed this view it just really struck me as interesting.

To answer Padraig's question; the title of yesterday's post was in fact a reference to a song from the early 1930's written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Sung originally in the Cotton Club in Harlem NY by Ethel Waters. It was later recorded by various artists including Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. I do not know if it was ever sung by George Benson. I did however, make a mistake when quoting it. The word "ain't" is not used in that line of the song but does appear later. The line is actually "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky...Stormy Weather..."

NEWS FLASH_Nikon has introduced it's first FULL FRAME DSLR-the D3!!!!!!!!!! See preview here. I think I'm in Love!!! I can't wait to see it. I know I won't get one any time soon but I am dying to see it field tested!
