Unlocked

previous / next

A couple of weeks ago I was just shooting a few things around the house. This is my cellar door latch. The ambient light from my front door was illuminating the old wood and latch. For whatever reason it just caught my eye.

The original image appeared black and white on the LCD screen of my camera to the point where I thought the settings had somehow been changed to black and white. They hadn't but there was so little color in the image, only the slightest hint of the old red/brown maple stain on the old door. I had intended to convert this to black and white and for a moment I thought the camera had started reading my mind!

News:

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

The Back Entrance

previous / next

This was shot the same evening as the previous shot. I passed the back of the building on the way back to the parking lot as I was leaving. The way the light caught the edges of the brick caught my eye. There was a kind of eerie look to this otherwise nondescript building.

Perfect Balance in Black and White

This is another from a series of similar photos with the daylily leaf and water droplets. This droplet stayed there almost until it evaporated after several hours. I had to leave the studio set up to go run errands and pick up Russell from school, get supper etc. and it was still sitting there.

See a color version of this one here.

Long Shadow

previous / next

This is a shot of the tiny Chinese Snuff bottle. This time I was experimenting with one of the snoots I made. This was the first snoot. I made 2 snoots using different materials and in differnt lenghts. The second one was better I think, not that it worked better it just fit better and was more sturdy. Here is a shot I took using the second improved snoot.

The problem with the snoots I made is that being made of cardboard and paper they aren't sturdy enough to shove in my bag every day. They don't collapse flat for portability. Now if I was more ambitious I would make one that is portable, but instead I went and bought the one from Lumiquest which folds nice and flat and is made of more durable materials. I can see where I might want to use the snoot "out in the field" to experiment as a supplement to natural light. I think there could be some interesting possibilities there. So that's when I decided to ge the Lumiquest snoot.
