Front Page Feature Photo

previous / next

This photo was recently featured for a front page feature article on the NJIO in a local newspaper's "PrimeTime" entertainment and culture insert. The photo was 1/2 of the cover page.

My kids have been involved with the NJIO for the past few years. They have since left the group because of scheduling conflicts, but their time there was very well spent. They learned a lot and met a wonderful group of people who share a passion for playing great music together.

The woman and child and this photo are actually mom and her very accomplished young son cellists playing side by side in the orchestra.

It was shot with my D200 at ISO 1600 1/100 sec. with my 80-200 mm f / 2.8 lens @125 mm @ f / 4.0. That is the typical set up I use for shooting at these concerts.

I apologize for my absence but work is piling up...which is a good thing! But it keeps me from having time to post.

Russ has made his decision about college. I will reveal it when he has signed his letter of intent and sent it in. He was accepted to some very fine schools and I think he has made a good decision that will give him a lot of opportunities to explore all the possibilities available to him. Whew! What an amazing, sometimes exciting, sometimes disappointing, and stressful experience this past year has been for him and us on this journey. I am very proud of him.

Bring Up the Lights!

Some of you may know that I am affiliated with a few local orchestras. Some of them I am involved with through my kids as well as working with them as a Music Librarian. I've also recently taken on the "job" of being their resident photographer this past year. I really enjoy working with the musicians they are truly wonderful, friendly, talented people.

Last night was the first of 2 winter concerts for one of these groups. The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra www.njio.org is a group of talented musicians of all ages ranging from the very young to the very young at heart. They have 3 levels of orchestras to challenge the fairly new musician to the more experienced, more advanced players. Many of the musicians choose to participate in all 3 groups just because they love to play and enjoy the camaraderie.

This is a shot I took from the lighting/sound booth just before the concert began. I will not likely be posting photos here of members since many are children and I've not obtained permission, so I will leave that up to the orchestra itself to decide which, if any, they would like to use on their web-site since they have the proper releases. I was pleased to see that my member photos were included in the program as well as in a fund raising campaign presentation. It made me smile.

Stage Lights

This is the young man who was responsible for the stage lights during the concert where I took this photo of Jon. He was high up on a ladder busily repairing a set of lights in preparation for the evenings performance. I know this photo is dark, but that darkness somehow seemed to lend an sense of the urgency to the situation. I could have shot it with the flash but chose not to. (I also didn't want to scare him off of the ladder, he was up pretty high.)
