Jersey Roots

previous / next

Well tomorrow is the big day! Russell will be moving into his dorm on the campus of Rutgers University to start his education in music performance at Mason Gross and double in Biology at the School of Arts and Sciences.

It will be a big change for all of us and an exciting one as well. We are close enough to attend any performances he may be involved in.

News:

This photo of the Bucknell Quad is a 2 page feature photo in the Summer 2008 issue of Bucknell Magazine.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

Front Page Feature Photo

previous / next

This photo was recently featured for a front page feature article on the NJIO in a local newspaper's "PrimeTime" entertainment and culture insert. The photo was 1/2 of the cover page.

My kids have been involved with the NJIO for the past few years. They have since left the group because of scheduling conflicts, but their time there was very well spent. They learned a lot and met a wonderful group of people who share a passion for playing great music together.

The woman and child and this photo are actually mom and her very accomplished young son cellists playing side by side in the orchestra.

It was shot with my D200 at ISO 1600 1/100 sec. with my 80-200 mm f / 2.8 lens @125 mm @ f / 4.0. That is the typical set up I use for shooting at these concerts.

I apologize for my absence but work is piling up...which is a good thing! But it keeps me from having time to post.

Russ has made his decision about college. I will reveal it when he has signed his letter of intent and sent it in. He was accepted to some very fine schools and I think he has made a good decision that will give him a lot of opportunities to explore all the possibilities available to him. Whew! What an amazing, sometimes exciting, sometimes disappointing, and stressful experience this past year has been for him and us on this journey. I am very proud of him.

2 Cellists

This was shot back in the Spring at an NJIO concert. Cynthia Longley was a guest musician who played Vivaldi's Double Cello Concerto along with NJIO member Martin Steinberg during the NJIO Spring Concert series.

Jon and Russell have been involved with the NJIO now for several years. It's a great group of musicians from all walks of life and a wide variety of ages, hence the name New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra. Jon and Russ have both benefited greatly from being a part of it. Please visit their website NJIO.org for more information.

Heart and Soul-More Street Photography

I am continuing with some more candid street shots. It's not something I do very often but I thought I should do more of these since they really give a view into the diversity that I experience every day in my travels around the area I live, work, and play.

This was shot on Saturday in Peddler's Village PA, which is a touristy, and beautiful, shopping village in Lahaska, Buck's County PA. Even though I don't live in PA, I do spend a lot of time there. I have since I was a little girl. I have friends and family there so it definitely feels like home to me. I was passing through Lahaska when I saw they were having their anual Scarecrow Competition and Festival in Peddler's Village, so I though I would just stop in and have a look. I hadn't been there in years for the festival and thought it could be fun.

At the festival, besides all the fun and creative scarecrows, there were also all manner of street entertainers. I got there really late so most of them were packing up for the day. I did have the pleasure of coming across these fantastic musicians. They had a table set up with some of the most beautiful instruments I'd ever seen. They drew quite a crowd with their musical talent as they played some of the same instruments that they had for sale.

I feel awful because I forgot to grab a card for this pair of wonderful musicians. In reality I should have bought one of their CD's but I was short on cash so I didn't, figuring I could contact them later to purchase but I don't have their card and don't remember their names. I will say that the music was soulful and very moving. Just beautiful. If anyone out there knows who they are please, please, tell me. I tried doing a search but got nowhere with it. I plan on calling the shop where they were set up in front of to ask if they know. I will update this post with the information.

Russell at Rehearsal

I want to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback on the previous post. I am so pleased that you all liked it.

The other day I posted an abstract of Russell playing his bassoon here. I decided to post a shot of Russell from Youth Orchestra Rehearsal. This was taken a couple of weeks ago. I take a lot of photos of the orchestras that we are involved with and most often they are candid shots like this one.

The youth orchestra is a wonderful group of very talented young musicians. Both Jon and Russell have been members for the past several years. Since joining this group their musicianship has improved greatly and they play some very challenging music. All original classical pieces no arrangements.

Playing the Bassoon

A while back I was trying to get some nice shots of Russell playing the bassoon. I discovered rather quickly that playing the bassoon doesn't yield very flattering facial expressions. Trust me they aren't too pretty. I decided to try some creative focus and just experiment a little to see what I would get. This was the result of one of the experiments.

I suppose if you aren't too familiar with the bassoon, this may just look random, but if you are familiar with the bassoon, then you can get the idea from the photo and it will make more sense.

I actually liked the abstract nature of this shot when I took it, but had held onto it for some months not sure if I was going to ever post it. I do like it, so here it is.

In other news, I have been able to talk to Rob several times on the phone this weekend. It was wonderful to actually hear his voice. He is doing well.

Ups and Downs

UP-The recital on Friday was very nice. Jon played very well and his hard work was evident. All the kids did so well and ought to be very proud. Melissa, the violin teacher, opened the recital with Beethoven Romanze in F. She plays like an angel. She is an angel, a nicer more talented person would be hard to find. We Love her! I know she is proud of the work her students have done and she's a terrific teacher.

DOWN-Jon went to the CJMEA Region II auditions and try as he did, he didn't quite make the cut. The pool of talent was amazing around 138 kids vying for about 48 spots in the violin sections. While disappointing for Jon he's still not discouraged and will try again next year. After looking at the results, the only regret is that he didn't audition on viola as well as violin. He has only been playing the viola since summer, and didn't think he was ready for viola, but I think he would have had a stronger chance in making it in had he auditioned on viola as well. It appears that all who auditioned on viola got in and some of the scores were fairly low, so next year he will work towards both and we will see what happens.

UP-Rob called on Saturday evening. We had not heard from him in several weeks because his field training made it so he could not contact us often. He will be headed back to GA in a few days. It was really great to hear his voice again. God, I miss that kid!

DOWN-Rob will be heading to Iraq very soon, within weeks in fact. I am scared of course, and I wish he didn't have to go. He fully expected to go when he signed up for the military back in 2005. This is what he's well trained for and is ready to do. I just pray that he will be safe. I know people who have been through this and they are a great support system and I thank them. Jerry Moores is a fellow photoblogger I "met" through the blogs recently who's son, Charlie, is a Captain in Special Forces has lent me an ear, and offered support and suggestions since his son has been there twice already and is due home soon. It's good to know there are others out there that understand. For now we just have to deal with things as they happen and trust that my son is well trained and has a good head on his shoulders.

As you can see it's been an Up and Down weekend. I am tired from it but I am ready to distract myself with work this week. I have some exciting things happening so that should be a good distraction.

This was shot at the recital, which was held at a lovely church, after all the kids finished as we were packing up to go down to the Fellowship Hall for delicious refreshments. I took shots at the recital which I will process and give to Melissa. The light was low so they need a little work which I will do this week. I am not going to post them on-line since they are of kids and I do not usually post pictures of other peoples kids without express permission which I did not get.

I may post on of Jon taken while he was warming up. His hair is so long that you can hardly see his eyes in any of the photos...I really need to convince him to get a hair cut. He wore a buzz cut for about 10 years while he was doing gymnastics, but the scissors have only touched his hair once since he stopped competing last winter.

Bring Up the Lights!

Some of you may know that I am affiliated with a few local orchestras. Some of them I am involved with through my kids as well as working with them as a Music Librarian. I've also recently taken on the "job" of being their resident photographer this past year. I really enjoy working with the musicians they are truly wonderful, friendly, talented people.

Last night was the first of 2 winter concerts for one of these groups. The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra www.njio.org is a group of talented musicians of all ages ranging from the very young to the very young at heart. They have 3 levels of orchestras to challenge the fairly new musician to the more experienced, more advanced players. Many of the musicians choose to participate in all 3 groups just because they love to play and enjoy the camaraderie.

This is a shot I took from the lighting/sound booth just before the concert began. I will not likely be posting photos here of members since many are children and I've not obtained permission, so I will leave that up to the orchestra itself to decide which, if any, they would like to use on their web-site since they have the proper releases. I was pleased to see that my member photos were included in the program as well as in a fund raising campaign presentation. It made me smile.

Sweet Music

I want to thank everyone for the Holiday wishes. It was a wonderful Christmas indeed! It was really good to have everyone under one roof. Oh, and the best present I got, besides Rob being home, was my very own Velcro Dart Nerf Gun!!! Look out boys...mamma's packin' Nerf!!! So now I am prepared for their ambushes. I'm a pretty fair shot too!

This is a picture of Jon's violin and some of his music from last year. I'm still having fun playing with the macro lens and lighting, so this was an experiment all the way around. It's not really a macro, although it was shot with that lens. I like this lens a lot, even for portraits, although my 85mm f 1.8 is still my best for portraits, this one definitely passes fair, although the focus is very finicky compared to the 85mm.

I did not get the printer yet, the one I want won't be in stock until some time in January. I did get a 500GB LaCie hard drive though for my photos which was definitely needed as I was starting to run out of space. I should be good to go for a while.

I meant to get out today and take some photos of bridges or the rail yard, but I made it out a bit late, because of a long phone call. When I finally did get out I got about 1/2 a block I discovered a nail in a very flat tire. That's 3 on this car in less than a year. Fortunately it was able to be repaired right away and only cost $10. There's been a lot of construction going on in the neighborhood this year...I will be glad when it's over! Maybe then I will stop getting nails in my tires.

It was too late to go where I wanted to go to shoot and the light had gone rather flat by the time I was able to get out anyway. I will just have to go tomorrow instead.

(I know there are specs in the photo, it's rosin from Jon's bow, not dust on my lens or sensor.)

Stage Lights

This is the young man who was responsible for the stage lights during the concert where I took this photo of Jon. He was high up on a ladder busily repairing a set of lights in preparation for the evenings performance. I know this photo is dark, but that darkness somehow seemed to lend an sense of the urgency to the situation. I could have shot it with the flash but chose not to. (I also didn't want to scare him off of the ladder, he was up pretty high.)
