Fisheye Football

previous / next

This is a high school football game I stumbled upon on my way out of the city after shooting all the photos in the Jersey City series. I had to stand on a block that just happened to be there and shoot through an iron railing. This was the best perspective I could get in among the people that were standing along the railing with me. I have to say that I thought it was a great way to end the day and the series.

This is the final shot in the Jersey City series. I know it was a very long series. I pre-posted all of the shots in this series because September and October tend to be very busy months for me. I have a lot of shots that I've taken over the period of time that this series ran and it will be interesting to pick out which ones to post as the backlog of images grows and grows.

As of July 2008 I have decided to post the same photos on "Parallel Universe" as I do here. It has become too complicated to maintain two different photoblogs on a regular basis. Feel free to visit "Parallel Universe" and look through the portfolio/archives since there are quite a few photos there that were never posted here. I will continue to post on both since each one gets different viewers.

Dizzying Heights

previous / next

This is a view from our seats at the Yankees vs Orioles game on July 30, 2008. I took this before the game started. The stadium was still filling and had over 54,000 fans which is pretty typical. I thought photographing this guy carrying beer while trying to negotiate his way to his seat gave a pretty dizzying perspective. While the seats we had were up high, they were decent seats behind home plate and the best part in the shade the entire game. This fact was really important because it was muggy and in the 90's.

Mark and his brother are big Yankee fans and get a package of tickets every year. This year his brother had a couple of occasions where he could not make the games. I have never in my life been to a Major League baseball game. This summer I got to go to two in as many weeks. When Mark asked me my initial response was "no". I figured either Russ or Jon would want to go, but they declined which left me feeling bad for saying no. So I thought about it and decided that it would be nice to participate in something that he loves so much. I had a very good time at the first game I went to on July 23 and the Yankees beat the Twins 5 to 1.

I did not bring either camera to the first game because Mark told me they did not allow large bags or backpacks into the stadium. The weather looked iffy and severe storms were in the forecast so I didn't want to get caught with my D200 (even though it is weather-sealed) in the rain and the Olympus is not weather-sealed at all.

As it turned out they have relaxed the "no backpack, no large bag" rule. So for this game on July 30, I decided to carry my Olympus E300 and the smallish bag I have for it to the game. I was glad I did. I got some nice photos for Mark's scrapbook and I might be able to make some nice prints for the game-room.

I really enjoyed myself and would definitely go again, perhaps a night game next time.

Oh, by the way, the Yankees beat the Orioles 13-3.

Barrel Racing

This barrel racer was shot at the Monmouth County Fair last Thursday. I originally processed this in color but when I resize an image for posting I will usually apply some sharpening in LAB color lightness channel since the act of resizing seems to soften images. When I saw what it looked like in the black and white of the lightness channel I decided to go back and re-process it as black and white. In comparison the color image seemed to have too many distractions with the orange cone in the background, the red tractor, and even the riders blue jeans seemed to distract from the image.

I don't know much about barrel racing and only saw a little of it at the fair. It seemed to be more of a demonstration as opposed to an actual competition when I was there. There were riders of many different levels. Some walked around the course while others were more aggressive and galloped around the course. It also seemed to be a very small course. I wish I had taken more time to watch but I wanted to fit in a few other sights in the few hours I had there that evening.

I posted some shots from the Fair on Parallel Universe of a Bald Eagle here and a Golden Eagle here from the Raptor Project show/demonstration featuring some large and gorgeous birds of prey that had been rescued restored to health.
