Flowering Pear in Black and White

previous / next

This is the flowering Bradford Pear that is in front of my house at the street. I shot this the same day as the previous shot.

Pink Profusion

previous / next

This is the weeping cherry tree in my front yard. I shot this a couple of weeks ago on a rather windy afternoon. It took a bit of patience especially shooting at f1.4. It is my favorite flowering tree. I almost lost this tree a couple of years ago after we discovered that our underground oil storage tank had leaked.

We had to have all the contaminated soil removed which left a hole that was about 3o' x 3o' x 14' deep in my front yard. I lost almost all of my landscaping, my driveway front steps and most of my sidewalk. I thought for sure I was going to lose the tree but it fell only a few feet short of that. I am so happy that it did not have to be dug up. It took quite a beating but has recovered beautifully. Oh, and I have a front lawn for the first time in 3 years. Next I have to re-plant some shrubs, and flowers. The entire remediation process took nearly 3 years to complete from the date of discovery to the date that we received our all clear "No Further Action" letter from the state EPA.

I've been crazy busy the past few weeks and haven't been able to respond as much or visit as many of you all as I usually try to do. I must apologize for my absence. Things should settle down a bit when concert season is over, which is in the next couple of weeks. Then I should be able to get into a more regular routine. I've had my blogs on auto post for the most part for the past few weeks because of my schedule.

A Single Tree

previous / next

I have photographed this tree several times over the years. You can see 2 of those shots here and here. This tree stands alone in this spot which is just a little spit of land , a jetty more or less, that sticks into the bay across from NY in the Atlantic Highlands. You used to be able to go onto the jetty but they recently replaced the fencing and gates which now extend into the water preventing access, unless you don't mind getting wet to get there. I shot this from a restaurant parking lot that is adjacent to the jetty.

Finding Peace Under the Old Tree by the River

previous / next

This is an old gnarly tree along the riverbank in my little Mohawk Park. It's a lovely little spot, so serene and peaceful. It's the kind of place that I could easily sit and read, or just let my mind wander.

Wow...10 days since I posted last. Well, it's been kind of busy here. I always say that things will calm down soon but they never do. I will try to catch up with everyone in a few days.

Rob will be home very soon, exactly when? I still don't know. I have a link to the incoming flights and the welcome ceremonies. There are now 5 listed in the next 10 days or so and more are added regularly, but I don't have a clue which one is Rob's. They said they would let me know as soon as they could. I'm really hoping I can be there when he steps off that plane in Georgia!

Ice Storm-Berries 3

previous / next

This is the last in the ice storm series...I think. I have more but I don't want to get too boring with them. I hope you enjoyed the series. As I mentioned before I am horticulturally challenged so I have no idea what kind of berries these are. If anyone knows feel free to set me straight.

Ice Storm-Berries 2

previous / next

This is the second photo in the ice storm series which was also shot in Mohawk Park on Friday after the ice storm. This is a more isolated view of the same kind of berries as the previous photo.

Thanks to Kathleen, I now know that this is called Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora Thunb.ex Murr.) Actually I know a lot about it now because she is a master when it comes to this stuff and left a wonderful detailed description and history in the comments on the previous post. Thanks Kathleen!

Ice Storm-Berries 1

previous / next

This was shot on Friday in Mohawk Park the day after we had a nasty ice storm. I have a series of photos of ice storm shots featuring different berries covered in ice that I will be posting in the coming days. I am horticulturally challenged so I have no idea what kinds of berries they are so if anyone can tell me I would appreciate it.

Autumn

previous / next

I want to thank everyone for all the well wishes on Rob's welcome home post. It really means a lot to him and to us. It is just so good to have him home. I have been and intend to continue to spoil him rotten while he is here.

His first order of business when he got home was to kiss the Missy (his cat) and take a real shower. I am happy to report that he is quite well and hasn't seemed to have changed a bit. It took him all of about 30 seconds to settle in and pick up where he left off. He is tormenting his brothers once again, all in good fun. He's taken over my office and set up both of his computers next to mine on my desk...I'm not so sure about that one! Good thing I have a big desk!

I hope everyone has a great weekend. It promises to be a busy one for us since we are also celebrating Jon's Confirmation this Sunday and having lots of family and friends here to join us in our multi-faceted celebration.
