GWB in Black and White

previous / next

I really need to thank everyone for the overwhelming response to the previous image. It received an amazing 78 comments at last count, 25 here and 53 over at Capture This Photography 2 (formerly known as Parallel Universe) I am really, really flattered by the amazing response it received. Thank you!

Now I have a hard act to follow I suppose...Hmmm...

I really don't know where to start with my backlog of images, but I don't want to post every day either. I like posting every other day because I find it more manageable.

I picked this one of the George Washington Bridge to start moving away from Jersey City. I love this bridge and there is a wonderful park that runs next to the river on the Jersey side and under the bridge. This was actually taken a few weeks before the Jersey City photos but I was anxious to do the Jersey City series so I set it aside.

The weather was not great that day and in fact we got caught in a violent storm as we were driving out of the park which made it a little scary with all the tree branches falling, the rain wind, lighting and thunder, and the sheer cliffs next to us. I felt worse for the bicyclers and hikers that got caught in the storm.

Fisheye Football

previous / next

This is a high school football game I stumbled upon on my way out of the city after shooting all the photos in the Jersey City series. I had to stand on a block that just happened to be there and shoot through an iron railing. This was the best perspective I could get in among the people that were standing along the railing with me. I have to say that I thought it was a great way to end the day and the series.

This is the final shot in the Jersey City series. I know it was a very long series. I pre-posted all of the shots in this series because September and October tend to be very busy months for me. I have a lot of shots that I've taken over the period of time that this series ran and it will be interesting to pick out which ones to post as the backlog of images grows and grows.

Grill Open

This is another shot of the funky bar, nightclub, Sand Bar USA, in the previous shot. It is such an odd place. There are a number of these couches sort of randomly placed around. I'm sure the place attracts a young crowd. There were only a few people there when we stopped in but I really get the sense that the place is a popular energetic night spot.

I want to take a moment to say thanks to the people who sent me supportive emails and messages. It means a lot to me.

Sand Bar USA

Is open! There is a funky bar/night club located on the waterfront in Jersey City next to the Marina in the previous shots. It is quite large and has a lot of outdoor areas complete with plastic palm trees, a sand beach, and some unusual furniture. We were there early in the afternoon so it was pretty quiet but judging from the looks of the place it is probably hopping at night especially in the summer. We stopped for a beer at one of the outside bars. We did not venture inside although it must be quite large with 2 dance floors and several lounge and dining areas.

The Harbor

previous / next

Would you believe this is Jersey City? It looks like a southern coastal city to me. Until you look closely at those plastic palm trees that are in the funky outdoor bar on the left called "Sand Bar USA". More on that in the next post or two.

What a beautiful day that was. It was one of those days you wish you could put in a bottle and take out whenever you feel like it.

The odd little shack where the sign was is on the left. It was so small and I found it quaint. It must have a pretty good view of the marina and parking lot.

Boat Lift

previous / next

This is the big boat lift at Liberty Harbor Marina. I'm not sure how this one works, but when I was a young adult I had a friend who worked in a marina and the ones they had used these huge straps that went beneath the hull of the boat and then lifted it like it was in a sling. My guess is this one is like those only the straps do not look like they are attached.

Liberty Harbor Marina

previous / next

Many people may not realize this but there are marinas located in Jersey City. I know of 2. This one is located near the city proper.

The photo is of the sign on the odd little guard shack. I really wanted a fisheye photo of it for this series so I accepted the sun's not quite so convenient position and accepted the lens flare such as it is. It doesn't really bother me now that I look at it.

Of course no city would be complete without at least one pigeon. Funny thing is I don't remember seeing any others. Maybe they were at the concert I mentioned over in Liberty State Park.

This is a view looking from Jersey City's waterfront across the water to the pier with NYC beyond. The pier is more like a plaza where they hold fairs, festivals, and concerts.

Bicycles on the Promenade

previous / next

There is a very beautiful promenade along the waterfront in Jersey City. The views of the NYC skyline are wonderful and it is just wonderful spot. It was such a gorgeous day but it was not terribly busy when we were there. There was a huge outdoor concert going on at Liberty State Park which is also in Jersey City and only a short distance from where we were, which may explain the lack of crowds.

Hyatt

previous / next

There is a lovely area at the waterfront in Jersey City with beautiful promenades and plazas that run along the Hudson River with beautiful views directly across from Lower Manhattan. The Hyatt is a luxury hotel right on the water in the heart of the waterfront and has wonderful views of the waterfront and Manhattan skyline. It seems like a nice alternative to staying in NYC since it is still close enough for tourists to easily get in and out of NYC via Ferry or Path trains.

Light Rail

One major improvement that has really made a difference in Jersey City is the Light Rail System. It was opened to the public in the spring of 2000.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail offers service from North and South Hudson County into the downtown Jersey City waterfront and Hoboken. The light rail trains provide transpoprtation for residents and employees, throughout Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City, West New York and North Bergen. It also serves as transportation to business and shopping centers including Exchange Place, Newport Centre and Hoboken. It will also connect passengers to other transit alternatives such as NJ TRANSIT buses and trains, the NY Waterway ferry, and PATH trains to New York City.

HIgh Rises Etc.

previous / next

Another in the Jersey City series. This one shows that the city is pretty typical of what you would expect to find in terms of the tall buildings and wide main thoroughfares. The streets also are very clean. From my observations it is a tidy city.

This was taken around 6 PM on a beautiful summer Saturday so the streets of the city were pretty empty.

Jersey City Brownstone

previous / next

First I should probably mention that I know this is a bit strange looking and that is because I shot it with a fisheye lens. What a fun and tricky lens to use.

This is one of the wonderful buildings in Jersey City that has been part of the rejuvenation of this renaissance city. I just love the windows and the railings on this building. It is a nice combo of old world charm and the modern city. Jersey City is a more affordable alternative to NYC living. Many young professionals are making the move here, and not just from NYC but also from the Suburbs for the easy commute into NYC.

My husband has worked in and around Jersey City many times over the years and he has seen the city change so much during this transformation. There is still much to be done but it is definitely wonderful to see the continuing progress.

Sultry City

I want to thank everyone for the wonderful feedback on the last image. It is one of my favorites. Some people asked me if it was HDR...It is not. Most of the processing, curves and color balancing, was done in Lightroom. The only thing I did in Photoshop was to blend a duplicate layer in Multiply mode and then adjust the opacity of that layer.

I want to apologize for being rather scarce in my visits of late but I am preparing for a huge portrait project that is coming up in the very near future. I want to be fully prepared for it so I have been working on improving my studio lighting techniques so that I can do it quickly and efficiently and produce quality results.

This photo is sort of an experiment in unusual framing. It was taken on Sunday early evening while strolling along the waterfront in Hoboken just across the river from NYC. It was about 90 degrees, very hot, humid, and sultry. The air was so thick it seemed as if you might have to chew it in order to breathe it. A heavy haze lay over the city giving the city a soft glowing appearance as if looking through a very fine sheer curtain. I shot this through the tree branches because when I noticed this view it just really struck me as interesting.

To answer Padraig's question; the title of yesterday's post was in fact a reference to a song from the early 1930's written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Sung originally in the Cotton Club in Harlem NY by Ethel Waters. It was later recorded by various artists including Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. I do not know if it was ever sung by George Benson. I did however, make a mistake when quoting it. The word "ain't" is not used in that line of the song but does appear later. The line is actually "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky...Stormy Weather..."

NEWS FLASH_Nikon has introduced it's first FULL FRAME DSLR-the D3!!!!!!!!!! See preview here. I think I'm in Love!!! I can't wait to see it. I know I won't get one any time soon but I am dying to see it field tested!

Park Lights

Thanks for the feedback on the last post. I have to say it is one of my favorites and I thought it was a really fun photo.

This is another one from my visit to Liberty State Park on Saturday. Liberty State Park has some of the prettiest lights I've seen in a park. I do hope they get around to replacing the burnt out bulbs though. Lower Manhattan is visible in the background of this one.

Tri-pod, uh, no, Mono-Pod, hmmm, no Bi-Pod!!!

I saw this couple in Liberty State Park on Saturday. I talked with them for a few moments since I'd noticed his creative use of his girlfriends shoulder as a tri-pod. He complained that his 600mm lens, was nearly impossible to hand hold and he really needed to get a tri-pod or at least a mono-pod. He had noticed that I was using a mono-pod at the time.

He was shooting with an "old film camera" as he put it, and what looked like a pretty old, if not somewhat well used 600mm lens.

Rebuilding

I found this building on a drive last weekend. I had parked behind it so I could take some pictures of an old abandoned mill on the opposite side of the street. It didn't look like much when I first looked at it. It was a mostly overcast afternoon with peaks of sun from time to time. When I returned to my car to leave, I noticed the late afternoon sun hitting the side of the building and the shadows really caught my eye. It looked as though repairs had been started on the building and then perhaps abandoned.

I am still trying to get my archives up and running again. Despite trying all sorts of different fixes, I still have no idea what is going on with them and Blogger has yet to respond to my numerous requests for help. I am among a number of other Bloggers who have been suffering through this issue for several weeks and some for several months now. In the meantime it is what it is, and I am sorry for any inconvenience it may cause. To view earlier work you can still click on the current photo and it will take you to the previous one.

Moon Over the GWB

This was shot on New Years Eve, the same day as the previous shot. I saw the moon coming up over the bridge deck as I was walking down the park road that runs beneath the bridge. When it rose to a point where it was framed by the bridge structure I thought it was a pretty cool sight.

Under the GWB looking at NY from Fort Lee

This was taken on New Years Eve from a park that is under the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee NJ. There is also a park up above on a cliff that has beautiful views of the bridge and the surrounding area as well.

It seemed kind of creepy being under this massive bridge with all the traffic rumbling far overhead.

On Saturday we did end up with temps in the 70's and Sunday it was in the 50's, still very warm for January. They say the cold air is coming, I'm going to miss the warm stuff! Although a little snow would be nice.
